[…] On an 1806 expedition up the Osage River in the northern Ozarks of Missouri, Army Lieutenant Zebulon Pike's men killed 32 deer in one week. Young John Shaw and two friends conducted a year-and-a-half-long hunt in southwestern Missouri and northern Arkansas. When they left the Boston Mountains in the spring of 1811, they packed out some 50 beaver pelts and 50 otter hides along with 300 bearskins and 800 gallons of bear oil. Traveling through the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks in 1818 and 1819, New Yorker Henry Rose Schoolcraft was on the lookout for valuable minerals, not animals, but he couldn't keep from observing the large numbers of elk, deer, turkeys, prairie chickens, quail, and passenger pigeons.
