[…] A seven-summer trek guide and base camp manager at Broad Peak Base Camp told Outside that in the Karakorum after that kind of a heavy snowfall, climbers normally want to wait several days for the snow to settle. But there was another factor. This is the end of July. The season was ending. The weather window was narrow. That pressure mattered. Ten climbers climbed to Camp 1 and then to Camp 2. But above Camp 2, the nature of the route changes. The standard route leaves the relative protection of a ridge and crosses an exposed avalanche slope towards Camp 3. At around 9 a.m. on July 30th, at approximately 6,600 meters or 21,600 feet, a massive avalanche released. […]
