[…] There is a thin book and a good one by an emerita professor of kids' literature at the Hebrew University named Miri Baruch. The book is called Children Then, Children Now. A Comparative Study of Children's Literature It is the adult's job to teach the child good manners and useful habits, values and knowledge fitting for his age, and to prevent him from learning inappropriate things. The child in these poems is always a social being, part of a collective, who must learn to give things up, to repress, to internalize anger and complaints, and to fit social norms, end quote. In this scheme of things, what kids' poems are, were here for back in the years before the state of Israel came into being was, most of all, to mold kids into good citizens, into good Zionists, into good collectivists, good little kibbutznikim and moshavnikim, good little tzabarim.
