Designing Quilt Patterns to Make Something That Can't Be Unmade - with Cheryl Brickey
<p>In this episode my Cheryl Brickey of MeadowMist Designs joins the podcast. When not designing quilts, and running a really fun and successful Curated Pattern Bundles project, Cheryl works writing patents for an industrial fabric design company. </p><p>We talk about the building blocks of pattern writing, design inspiration, and what, if anything, pattern designers can do to protect their intellectual property.</p><p>We talked a little about what got us into quilting, and Cheryl said something that really resonated with me: she wanted to make something that couldn’t be unmade. What a great way to look at the legacy behind a quilt.</p><p>Show Notes:</p><p>Website - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.meadowmistdesigns.com/">https://www.meadowmistdesigns.com/</a></p><p>Instagram - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/meadowmistdesigns/">https://www.instagram.com/meadowmistdesigns/</a></p><p>Mystery Quilt Alongs - <a target="_blank" href="https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/p/mystery-quilt.html">https://meadowmistdesigns.blogspot.com/p/mystery-quilt.html</a></p><p>Yvonne - Quilting Jetgirl - https://quiltingjetgirl.com/</p><p>Advent calendar with pockets - <a target="_blank" href="https://huntersdesignstudio.com/product/countdown/">https://huntersdesignstudio.com/product/countdown/</a></p><p>QuiltCon - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.quiltcon.com/home">https://www.quiltcon.com/home</a></p><p>Hoffman Fabrics - <a target="_blank" href="https://hoffmancaliforniafabrics.net/">https://hoffmancaliforniafabrics.net/</a></p><p>Carolina Moore - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.carolinamoore.com/">https://www.carolinamoore.com/</a></p><p>Cheryl Brickey’s books:</p><p>*Modern Plus Sign Quilts - <a target="_blank" href="https://amzn.to/4tDGTwT">https://amzn.to/4tDGTwT</a></p><p>*Just One Charm Pack Quilts - <a target="_blank" href="https://amzn.to/4mnDBLW">https://amzn.to/4mnDBLW</a></p><p>*Just Two Charm Pack Quilts - <a target="_blank" href="https://amzn.to/4dGaKQO">https://amzn.to/4dGaKQO</a></p><p>Bernina 710 - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Machines-US/Series-Overview/BERNINA-7-Series/BERNINA-710">https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Machines-US/Series-Overview/BERNINA-7-Series/BERNINA-710</a></p><p>*Launch - <a target="_blank" href="https://amzn.to/4efakkq">https://amzn.to/4efakkq</a></p><p>*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay more</p><p><p>How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a hand-made, never AI, reader-supported publication. What Making Quilts and Writing Novels Have in Common - with Marianne Fons

It was great to be able to ask her about what the business landscape looked like when direct mail was how you reached your customers. </p><p>Surprisingly, some aspects of business haven’t changed at all, and we talked about the importance of the right person doing the right job within a growing business, and that she and Liz were great opposites and compliments to each other.</p><p>Recently, she has shifted her interests to becoming a novelist, and has a book coming out next year. Our conversation covers some of the similarities in creating books and creating quilts, and lot about creative inspiration in general.</p><p>Show Notes</p><p>Website - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mariannefons.com/">https://www.mariannefons.com/</a></p><p>Substack -Fons and Porter - <a target="_blank" href="https://quiltershalloffame.net/fons-porter/">https://quiltershalloffame.net/fons-porter/</a></p><p>Mary Fons - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.maryfons.com/">https://www.maryfons.com/</a></p><p>Eleanor Burns - <a target="_blank" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_Burns">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_Burns</a></p><p>Montavilla Sewing Center - https://www.montavillasewing.com/</p><p>Tara Miller - <a target="_blank" href="https://quiltdistrict.com/">https://quiltdistrict.com/</a></p><p>Six Know-it-Alls - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/@SixKnowItAlls">https://www.youtube.com/@SixKnowItAlls</a></p><p>European Patchwork Meeting - <a target="_blank" href="https://patchwork-europe.eu/en/home/">https://patchwork-europe.eu/en/home/</a></p><p>Red and White quilt collection - <a target="_blank" href="https://folkartmuseum.org/exhibitions/infinite-variety-three-centuries-of-red-and-white-quilts/">https://folkartmuseum.org/exhibitions/infinite-variety-three-centuries-of-red-and-white-quilts/</a></p><p>Iowa Quilt Muesum - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iowaquiltmuseum.org/">https://www.iowaquiltmuseum.org/</a></p><p>Iowa Theater - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.the-iowa.com/">https://www.the-iowa.com/</a></p><p>Quilt Talk - <a target="_blank" href="https://huntersdesignstudio.com/product/book-quilt-talk-autographed/">https://huntersdesignstudio.com/product/book-quilt-talk-autographed/</a></p><p>Page and Pixel - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.page-and-pixel.com/">https://www.page-and-pixel.com/</a></p><p>C&T Publishing - <a target="_blank" href="https://ctpub.com/">https://ctpub.com/</a></p><p>Portland Art Museum - <a target="_blank" href="https://portlandartmuseum.org/">https://portlandartmuseum.org/</a></p><p>David Hockney - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hockney.com/home">https://www.hockney.com/home</a></p><p>BERNINA - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Home-United-States">https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Home-United-States</a></p><p>Baby Lock - <a target="_blank" href="https://babylock.com/">https://babylock.com/</a></p><p>Janome - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.janome.com/">https://www.janome.com/</a></p><p>*Theo of Golden - <a target="_blank" href="https://amzn.to/47rMiP9">https://amzn.to/47rMiP9</a></p><p>Big Magic - <a target="_blank" href="https://amzn.to/4tbZuQv">https://amzn.to/4tbZuQv</a></p><p>Brené Brown - <a target="_blank" href="https://brenebrown.com/">https://brenebrown.com/</a></p><p>*Dare to be a Great Writer - <a target="_blank" href="https://amzn.to/3PNPAGd">https://amzn.to/3PNPAGd</a></p><p>*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay more</p><p><p>How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a hand-made, never AI, reader-supported publication. Judging Quilts Professionally - with Kathie Beltz
<p>In this episode Kathie Beltz joins us to talk about all things to do with judging quilts for quilt shows. She covers the things to pay attention to if you hope to be considered for a prize, and I got to ask about criteria for bindings, which is something I’ve had notes on when I’ve entered competitions!</p><p>One of the things she points out is that, while design definitely matters, many of the criteria included in quilt judging have to do with making a quilt that will last. The critiques you might get about your stitches are not just the judges being picky!</p><p>Show Notes</p><p>Website - <a target="_blank" href="https://kathiebeltz.com/">https://kathiebeltz.com/</a></p><p>Instagram - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/kathiebeltz/">https://www.instagram.com/kathiebeltz/</a></p><p>QuiltCon - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.quiltcon.com/home">https://www.quiltcon.com/home</a></p><p>MQX - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/mqxquiltshow/">https://www.instagram.com/mqxquiltshow/</a></p><p>Vermont Quilt Festival - <a target="_blank" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermont_Quilt_Festival">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermont_Quilt_Festival</a></p><p>Kathie’s classes and lectures - <a target="_blank" href="https://kathiebeltz.com/classes/">https://kathiebeltz.com/classes/</a></p><p>National Association of Certified Quilt Judges - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nacqj.com/">https://www.nacqj.com/</a></p><p>Simi Valley Quilt Guild - <a target="_blank" href="https://simivalleyquiltguild.com/">https://simivalleyquiltguild.com/</a></p><p>BERNINA 150- <a target="_blank" href="https://sewing.patternreview.com/SewingMachine/98">https://sewing.patternreview.com/SewingMachine/98</a></p><p><p>How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a hand-made - never AI, reader-supported publication.
