[…] For if one did indeed one day slide down your sooty chimney and choose to live with you and your family, then they were of great assistance. Because unlike their fairy cousins, brownies are by and large friendly and benevolent, if a little shy. And once they're happy and settled in the household, they will remain loyal for many generations. For instance, there was a brownie down in Leithon Hall in Dumfreeshire who told an old woman who had known him all her life that he had been helping out her family there for over 300 years. And perhaps because they're so involved for so long, they become very protective over their families and often care for the folk there very deeply. […]
