About The Sunnydale Diaries - A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Podcast

Watching Buffy with fresh eyes...and 25 years of baggage. The Sunnydale Diaries is a rewatch podcast with a twist: one host has loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer since the 90s, and the other is watching it for the very first time. Each week, Sean (the lifelong fan) and Melanie (the first-time viewer) revisit an episode and start by connecting its theme, or even a single scene, to their own lives, whether that’s family, relationships, eggs (yes, eggs), or the weird emotional baggage we all carry. From there, they break down what holds up, what doesn’t, and why this show still resonates decades later. Part recap, part personal reflection, and part “wait, did that really happen?”, The Sunnydale Diaries is for longtime fans, curious newcomers, and anyone who likes their pop culture discussions grounded in real life.

Episode 97 - It's the Bench! (Tough Love)

Things are getting very real in Sunnydale, as we cover Buffy S5 E19 "Tough Love". Buffy is forced into a new role as Dawn's caregiver, while Willow and Tara have a fight that starts with some questionable communication and ends with devastating consequences. Glory is closing in on the Key, Willow taps into some seriously dark magic, and Spike once again finds himself being the voice of reason. This week, we talk about conflict in our own relationships (including Sean's extremely dramatic attempt to pack a suitcase), debate whether Willow and Tara's argument escalated way too quickly, revisit one of our favorite HellmouthCon photo ops, and have a lot to say about Sunnydale Hospital's decision to send Tara home. Plus: Glory finally gets the information she's been looking for, Melanie rates “Tough Love” an impressive 4½ staks, and she makes a pretty major prediction about Ben and Glory as we head closers toward the Season 5 finale. And don't forget: our “I Was Made to HUD You” Season 5 contest is underway! Create your own BuffyBot-style HUD for a Season 5 character (or Sean or Melanie) and send it our way (thesunnydalediaries@gmail.com) by November 15, 2026.

Episode 96 - A Very Autumnal Episode (Intervention)

Buffy heads to the desert in search of answers, while back in Sunnydale, everyone gets a very unexpected introduction to...Buffy. Well, sort of. This week we’re talking Season 5, Episode 18, “Intervention,” where Buffy goes on a vision quest, Spike gets way too comfortable with his custom-made Buffybot, the Scoobies stage the world’s most awkward intervention, and Glory decides to find out just how much pain a vampire can take. We break down Buffybot’s hilarious HUD observations, Tara’s perfectly timed “Are you kidding? She’s nuts,” Spike’s ramen-noodle hair, Giles’ magical desert gourd routine, and the surprisingly emotional turn the episode takes when Spike refuses to give up Dawn’s secret. Plus, we officially launch our Season 5 contest: I Was Made to HUD You! Create your own Buffybot-style heads-up display for a Season 5 character (or even Sean or Melanie) and make it as detailed, ridiculous, and funny as possible. Entries are due by midnight on November 15, 2026, and we’ve got some pretty fabulous Buffy-themed prizes waiting for the winners. And somewhere along the way, Melanie attempts to decode what exactly “Death is your gift” is supposed to mean. Grab your magic gourd, activate your special programs, and join us for “Intervention.”

Episode 95 - Intentional Pigtails (Forever)

The grief of “The Body” doesn’t end when the episode does. This week on The Sunnydale Diaries, Melanie and Sean discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5, Episode 17, “Forever,” as Buffy and Dawn struggle with Joyce’s death in very different ways. Buffy throws herself into handling everything that needs to be done, while Dawn becomes increasingly desperate to find a way, any way, to bring her mother back. We talk about the messy, nonlinear stages of grief, Buffy’s guilt and emotional walls, Dawn’s turn toward resurrection magic, and Willow making some increasingly questionable choices of her own. Plus, Spike shows a surprisingly sincere side, Giles quietly remembers Joyce, Angel returns at exactly the moment Buffy needs him, and Joel Grey shows up as the extremely mysterious andsomewhat unsettling Doc. And when a knock finally comes at the Summers’ front door, Buffy and Dawn are forced to confront what they’ve both been avoiding. Melanie also gives her prediction for “Intervention,” which apparently involves Giles, a gourd, and possibly a cult.
