[…] The Eisbach Canal wasn't built for fun. There's a reason they call it the Eisbach. It's cold, and its current is fast enough to sweep you off of your feet. It runs along the eastern edge of Munich's Central Park, rushing below maple and linden trees. About a kilometer downstream, the current feeds an electrical power plant. It's dangerous to go in. About once a year, someone drowns. All along its banks are signs warning against swimming, with skull pictograms to drive the point home. But the signs haven't really sunken in. On the contrary. For decades, swimming down the Eisbach has been how young people in Munich celebrate summer. […]
