[…] He wanted concrete emplacements. He wanted gun positions, trenches, barbed wire entanglements, minefields. He wanted this to be... a modern Great Wall of China. The deficiencies of the defences soon became apparent to Field Marshal Ervin Rommel, who had been appointed as inspector of the Atlantic Wall section from the west coast of Denmark to the border with Spain. He was shocked at the poor state of the defences and argued for more men and material to shore up the coastline. In January 1944, Rommel was given command of Army Group B defending Northern France and the Low Countries. Over the next four months, Rommel tirelessly dedicated himself to improving the Atlantic Wall before the expected invasion. […]
