[…] Now, there are actually like 13 different ways to balk, but only two are common. So these two are the only ones that coaches need to know. The first type of balk is the start-stop balk. The most common example of this is a runner on first base and the pitcher comes set. and then he turns his shoulders to peek at the runner. And the reason it's called the start-stop-balk is because once the pitcher's come set, the pitcher can only do one of three things. He's either gonna pitch, he's gonna pick off, or he's gonna step off the rubber. So when you turn your shoulders after you've come set, that movement is presumed to be the start of one of those three things. […]
