This podcast might not actually kill you, but Erin Welsh and Erin Allmann Updyke cover so many things that can. In each episode, they tackle a different topic, teaching listeners about the biology, history, and epidemiology of a different disease or medical mystery. She is a disease ecologist and epidemiologist and works full-time as a science communicator through her work on the podcast. Erin Allmann Updyke, MD, Ph.D. is a co-host of This Podcast Will Kill You. She’s an epidemiologist and disease ecologist currently in the final stretch of her family medicine residency program. […] One single dose of an injection of vitamin K. What that does is it provides a steady supply of vitamin K for the first several months of life. And this reduces the risk of bleeding to almost zero. It goes down to about 0.4, especially for late vitamin K bleeds, to about 0.4 per 100,000 babies born from 4 to 7 to 80. Babies who receive no vitamin K prophylaxis are 81 times more likely to have a late bleed. So that is the recommendation almost everywhere. Some places, though, use oral administration, and that is an option. It still can significantly reduce the risk of bleeding, but it is not as effective as the injection. […]
