[…] I think it was Augustus, but he's always called General Pitt Rivers. And as you might expect from being a general, he did have a long military career. He didn't so much do hand-to-hand fighting. He specialised in the development and use of the rifle, that being the new technology of the 19th century. So he kind of brought rifles into the army. So he spent the first half of his working life doing this. And he also became interested in other weapons, weapons in the past, then tools. And all of that drew him into archaeology. And eventually he went part time with the army so that he could devote more time to archaeology. […]
