“State of Flux” 30th-anniversary reflections
A scouting expedition to an alien planet leads to a game-changing discovery. Surprisingly, it's not leola root. Nor is it mushrooms; though these are all pretty tasty finds. Even the Kazon can't lay claim to the title, despite turning out to have Starfleet technology aboard their ship. But we're getting warmer. How did the Kazon get their hands on the tech? […] Yeah. So, but yeah, I think what they do with the doctor is what really makes this, there are two things that make this episode quite good for me. One is the character building for the doctor, of course. And the other one is that the Star Trek story that I mentioned in the very beginning. It plays into the whole thing that's going on with the holodeck here with the photonic energy formation that the doctor uncovers. And whereas typically with the holodeck story like this, whatever the scenario is, the crew, they're interacting with the characters and there's some computer malfunction usually that's going on that causes them to be in danger because the safety's become disabled or... something like that or maybe you get something and it's still computer related like at the end of the next generation with emergence where the enterprise is giving birth to a life form and all this crazy stuff is happening on the holodeck as part of that process. […]
