Een gigantisch hoge golf verwoest het leven van heel veel mensen en zorgt voor ongekende schade in meer dan tien landen.

Mardya heeft leuke vrienden, gaat naar een gezellige school en woont in een fijne buurt. En dan hoort ze van haar ouders dat er iets groots staat te gebeuren in Suriname, het land waar haar ouders zijn geboren. Suriname wordt onafhankelijk van Nederland. Wat betekent dat? Daar komt Mardya snel achter, want ze gaat met het hele gezin met de boot naar Suriname om erbij te zijn en er te gaan wonen.

In 1999 had een Nederlandse man een idee: we sluiten 12 mensen op in een huis en we zetten overal camera’s neer. En dan mag iedereen daar naar kijken. En dat deden anderhalf miljoen Nederlanders, elke dag! Michael zag hoe wereldberoemd dit televisieprogramma werd. En hij is tot op de dag van vandaag fan van dat eerste seizoen van: Big Brother.
