The University of Austin stands for America, for freedom, for excellence, and for the hard work of distinguishing what is true from what is merely popular.

Should a Free Society Tolerate the Intolerant? Shabbos Kestenbaum in Conversation
Should a free society tolerate the intolerant? Can American Jews stay Jewish in a country that never forces them to choose? Why hasn't Holocaust education reduced antisemitism? Commentator Shabbos Kestenbaum joins UATX student William Posey of the Austin Union at UATX for a wide-ranging conversation.
Shabbos Kestenbaum is an activist and commentator focused on antisemitism and U.S. foreign policy. He rose to national attention in 2024 when he and fellow Harvard students sued the university over antisemitic discrimination. He hosts "Theological" at PragerU and holds a BA in religion from Queens College and a master's in theological studies from Harvard Divinity School.
Here Kestenbaum makes the case for open debate over censorship, and explains why a deeply rooted Jewish identity matters more than fixating on antisemitism. He also discusses the paradox of tolerance, tension between American and Jewish values, Jewish secularization, Christian nationalism, and his views on Islam and the West.
This event was hosted by the Austin Union, a student debate organization founded at UATX, and sponsored by the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission.
Recorded Oct. 5, 2026 at UATX.

What Really Causes Recessions? | Tyler Goodspeed
Do economic booms carry the seeds of their own collapse? It's one of the most persistent ideas in economics, and Tyler Goodspeed thinks it's wrong. Drawing on 132 recessions across more than three centuries of American and British history, Goodspeed argues that we keep telling ourselves the wrong story about why economies crash — and that recessions are typically caused not by the excesses of the boom that came before, but by adverse shocks we fail to anticipate or absorb. In this talk at UATX, Goodspeed presents his new book, “Recession: The Real Reasons Economies Shrink and What to Do About It.”
Tyler Goodspeed is chief economist of ExxonMobil and former acting chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. He holds a PhD in history from Harvard and a PhD in economics from Cambridge.

Why Tariffs Are the Wrong Answer on China | AEI's Robert Doar
Robert Doar on why tariffs are the wrong answer on China, and what the poverty debate still gets wrong.
Robert Doar became AEI’s 12th president in July 2019, leading one of the nation’s oldest and most respected public policy think tanks. Since becoming president of AEI, Doar has recruited dozens of leading scholars and fellows across multiple issue areas and launched a new research division focused on Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies.
