Honest movie reviews, out-of-theatre reactions, weekly rankings, and long-form film discussions from umskaboom. I cover new releases, older movies, and everything I’m watching.
Desperate escapes, a threatened chance at freedom, an unbearable home invasion, and a night spiralling into panic.
In this episode, I discuss The Yellow Sea, Wasteman, Funny Games, and MadS, and the different ways they kept me anxious about what would happen next.
I share my personal reactions, the performances and filmmaking choices that made the tension work, and the slower moments that did not always land.

The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil Review Worth the Wait
How do you make me root for a ruthless gangster? Put him up against a serial killer who somehow makes him look like the reasonable one.
In this episode, I review The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil and discuss Ma Dong-seok’s intimidating presence, Kim Mu-yeol’s determined cop, and Kim Sung-kyu’s completely remorseless killer.
The unlikely partnership and their different investigative methods make this hunt entertaining, with twists and intense chases that had me wanting this guy caught so badly. But it took about 40 minutes to really hook me, and that slow opening is my biggest criticism.
My rating is 4/5.

Wasteman Review I Just Wanted Him to Get Out
Taylor is so close to freedom, and I spent Wasteman worrying that every decision could take it away from him.
In this episode, I talk about David Jonsson and Tom Blyth’s excellent performances, Taylor and Dee’s tense relationship, and how a promise to his son gives the whole movie something worth caring about. The prison violence feels painfully real, and the ending brings that tension together brilliantly.
A brutal prison thriller that kept me invested in whether Taylor could finally get home.
My rating is 4/5.
