L’Osservatore Romano (periódico oficial del Vaticano), en la primera página de su edición del 15 de marzo, 2000, publicó el siguiente titular: “EL SANTO PADRE CELEBRA EL ‘DÍA DEL PERDÓN’”. El comentario que presentaba el discurso del papa, decía: “El domingo 12 de marzo, el primer domingo de cuaresma, el papa Juan Pablo II celebró la santa misa en la basílica de San Pedro y pidió al Señor perdón por los pecados, pasados y presentes, de los hijos e hijas de la iglesia”. ¿Sólo de los hijos e hijas, y no de la iglesia? Sí, y esa es la posición oficial que se presenta en todos los documentos.
El papa dijo: “Todos estamos invitados a realizar un profundo examen de conciencia... reconocer los errores pasados sirve para despertar nuestras conciencias a los compromisos del presente...” [sic]. Ciertamente, el profundo examen y despertamiento de la conciencia que profesa el papa revelaría detalles específicos, si no de todas, por lo menos de algunas de las injusticias cometidas. Sin embargo, ningún acto de maldad se describe en el llamado del papa al arrepentimiento, ni en los otros documentos relacionados con el tema.

El catolicismo romano afirma que se basa, no sólo en la Biblia, sino también en la “tradición” que, supuestamente, se ha transferido desde los apóstoles. Sin embargo, no hay ninguna tradición católica que se remonte hasta los apóstoles. ¡Ni una sola! Las tradiciones católicas surgieron mucho tiempo después de esa época, y la idea de la infalibilidad fue una de las últimas. El concepto de las declaraciones ex cátedra —centrales para sostener la infalibilidad— ni siquiera se había concebido antes del siglo XVI.

Como hemos visto, la herejía resulta en la excomunión automática. Incluso un papa hereje, si no fuera restaurado al arrepentirse de sus herejías, rompería la línea de la supuesta sucesión apostólica desde Pedro. Como se ha mostrado, muchos papas fueron acusados de herejía por otros papas y por concilios, y varios fueron excomulgados formalmente.
El papa Adriano VI (1522-1523), quien personalmente declaró al papa Celestino III (1191-1198) como hereje, afirmó que Juan XXII era sólo otro en la larga línea de papas herejes.
