#002: alcohol addiction and moderation v. abstinence, naltrexone & the sinclair method w/ dr. michele d. perron, PhD
a captivating discussion on unacceptable ideas, host jake nelson engages with michele d. perron, phd, a renowned addiction coach specializing in alcohol moderation services. this conversation delves into the intricacies of alcohol addiction, exploring modern approaches such as the sinclair method and harm reduction strategies, while challenging long-held views on sobriety and treatment.
alcohol addiction: moderation versus abstinence
the conversation begins with a critical examination of the age-old debate: moderation versus abstinence. michele emphasizes that recovery is a deeply personal journey. while abstinence is a cornerstone of organizations like alcoholics anonymous (aa), moderation can be a viable path for many. michele, with years of experience and firsthand success stories, supports individuals in achieving low-frequency, low-volume drinking, where moderation becomes a meaningful reality.
the sinclair method: a game changer for recovery
the sinclair method (tsm), as discussed by michele, is a revolutionary approach to addiction recovery. it employs naltrexone to block the euphoric effects of alcohol, gradually reducing the desire to drink. supported by figures like claudia christian, tsm is shown to be effective in up to 78 percent of cases, offering an alternative to traditional abstinence-based programs. michele's focus on positive psychology and nutritional support further enhances recovery, aiming to boost brain health and reduce cravings.
the role of support and education
jake shares his personal journey from the depths of addiction to recovery, highlighting the importance of support networks and education in the process. from medical detox to residential treatment and aa meetings, his story underscores that recovery is multifaceted. michele echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of understanding dopamine and serotonin's roles in addiction, while advocating for a balanced diet and lifestyle adjustments that bolster mental health.
the emerging paradigm: new modern recovery
michele introduces "new modern recovery" as an emerging concept that focuses on individual choice and empowerment. this approach rejects the notion of failure and shame tied to addiction, instead promoting understanding and compassionate support. by incorporating tools like the 25 theories of addiction and the via assessment of 24 character strengths, recovery can be customized to the individual's strengths and needs, fostering sustainable change.
navigating challenges: cannabis, medication, and more
as attitudes towards cannabis shift, its potential role in recovery warrants discussion. while cannabis can be a helpful tool for some, especially in harm reduction, understanding the risks, including potential psychotic breaks, is crucial. michele's insights into medication-assisted treatment (mat), including naltrexone, provide clarity on how these can serve both moderation and abstinence pathways effectively.
final thoughts: moving forward with hope
jake and michele conclude their discussion with a message of hope and possibility. for those struggling with addiction, the landscape is evolving, with more options and support available than ever before. whether through the sinclair method, aa, or a combination of therapies, help is accessible, and recovery is achievable.
interested individuals are encouraged to seek support tailored to their needs. michele's pioneering work and her upcoming app, "splashed not smashed," represent steps toward a more inclusive and effective recovery paradigm. for more information and resources, visit micheleperronphd.com.
