Thorngroovians 2: The reality of life abroad
Life abroad for many of us has not been as great as we thought it would be. The Thorngroovians talk about the reality of life in the UK.

In the UK and US, coloured is an outdated term used to describe people that aren’t white. It has a history of being used predominantly to describe black people. It has not been considered acceptable since the mid-twentieth century. However, in some African countries, it’s a term widely used to describe persons of mixed race, predominately those claiming both European and African ancestry, in Malawi, Zambia, and, particularly Zimbabwe. Some of my family who are part of this community have embraced this classification because some have not been given the legal right to be “black or white”. They have always been on the outside looking in hence why this conversation is pivotal. Please join us on this podcast as we navigate this journey of being born between races. They Don't Love Us
In a previous episode, she exclaimed they don't love us, and immediately I knew we had to revisit that statement. So here Sabrina explains what she meant in context.

Long Overdue
A conversation with my nephew Junior Ndlovu. Its always amazing when my kids are now the ones teaching me. I will be the first to admit that this was a conversation long overdue and worth its weight in gold.

The Unfiltered View With The Brothers
We met in the gym and formed our 'gang'😅. Occasionally we will meet in the sauna and have these unfiltered and uncomfortably frank conversations about everything life. We are all fathers and are trying to do the best for them. This is a just an example of the many conversations we have. Its organic, unedited, raw and may offend some.
During the conversation we stopped for some Pakoras cooked by one of the brothers. They tasted daaaarn good too😁!
Feel free to comment, engage or contribute.

The 'talk' with my niece
I met her the day she was born now she thinks she is grown😂. Introducing my niece. Rissa recently made a statement that shook me to the core. She is biracial (black and white) and on one of our many conversations she said she gets racism from both sides. Let that simmer for a minute. Yeah that was my reaction hence why like any self respecting uncle I said come onto my podcasting and we chop it up.

Simply Aisha
She comes from my continent. We met at University on a Journalism masters and we just clicked. She is unapologetically African even though I initially thought she was from Birmingham. You will notice that I have a great love for conversing with sisters as they bring an alternative viewpoint.

Everyone needs a 'Brina' in their life
She is my best friend for so many reasons. We can talk about nothing and it makes sense to us. I have known her for what seems like forever and seen her grow from the 'tomboyish girl' at Firshill school to the beautiful woman, mother, and creative that she is. We enjoy swapping photography tips and just looking for that shot that we can show off to each other.
This is hopefully the beginning of us just riffing about life in general. This is one of those conversations that begin with one thing and end with another. Ladies and gentlemen meet my other person, Sabrina.

The Experience that binds us
Tara Goddard was born in the Deep South of America and I was born in Zimbabwe. You would think that in itself will mean opposite sides of the fence. She is a musician and I once dabbled in music and I love music when its done well. We are both parents. We are now residents of the cradle of English civilisation here in Yorkshire.
In this episode we look our backgrounds and some of the assumptions I have about America. She schools me on her experience growing up in the States and naturally I throw in my Zimbabweness into the conversation.

Grounding
Natasha is my niece. She is a mother to a daughter who encapsulates everything good about this life. Secretly I refer to her as my granddaughter because the concept of grandniece is a foreign (White) concept to an African such as I. I am often fascinated about how these young babies are raising their babies. So Tasha and I talk about everything under the sun.

The Experience
I have lived in the United Kingdom far longer than in Zimbabwe my country of birth. My experiences though different are universal for a number of people who are classed as 'Black'. I love my new home even through some of those experiences that would make me raise my eyebrow and emit an occasional 'mmmhhhh'. Yes I am aware the episode is quite lengthy but bear with me as I figure out a format that is okay for everyone. Thank you for listening.

The Songbird
Tara Goddard is a vocal powerhouse. The first time I met her I knew I had to be part of her circle and thus far I have. She is a wonderful human being and feels like a family member. As much as this was about her music journey prior to the recording we were chopping it up about raising kids and the adventures of parenthood. Did I tell you she is a wife and mother to a son and two daughters. I am also her cheerleader.

Fatherhood
I have glibbly named this episode 'Fatherhood' but in reality it is about 'Growing up Black’, how we were are raising our children. What is interesting is how Lee's experience despite growing up on opposite sides of the world has recognisable similarities. In essence the 'Black' experience is similar in the diaspora.

Early Conversations
This is one of those unplanned spontaneous conversations that we have that start on one thing and end on a completely different topic. He is my friend, gym buddy, a positive human being who is part of my circle. As you will notice this is my attempt at this saturated world of podcasting. I love to talk.

Introduction
It has taken a while to try and figure a way to introduce the podcast. From overthinking the process to second guessing myself to finally going for it. Do not worry this is probably the only episode that features only me. In future episodes I am bringing guests.
