The Dilemma
What happens when two of your deepest convictions collide—and there’s no way to honor both? Welcome to Episode 5 of Undeniably Human, where we’re following Season 51 of Survivor as an unfolding human case study. This week, an emotional episode brings us powerful personal stories, unexpected twists, and one of the wildest tribal councils of the season. But tucked into all that Survivor chaos is something even more fascinating: a genuine moral dilemma. When one player finds herself caught between two deeply held convictions, she faces a decision that goes far beyond strategy. Whatever she chooses, something she values will be sacrificed. And isn’t that an undeniably human experience? In this episode, we explore what happens when our values come into conflict, how our personal moral compass differs from the beliefs and expectations we’ve inherited, and why navigating these tensions is such an important part of understanding who we truly are. I also reflect on my own experience growing up in a culture where right and wrong often seemed black and white, and the ongoing process of questioning, evaluating, and choosing the convictions that genuinely align with who I am. Whether you watch Survivor or simply find human behavior fascinating, come geek out with me over the story behind the story. Not A Damn Thing
What happens when life makes a decision for you—and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it? Welcome to Episode 4 of Undeniably Human, where we’re following Season 51 of Survivor as an unfolding human case study. This week, an unexpected tribe swap turns the game upside down. Some players lose rewards they’ve already earned, while others find themselves navigating entirely new relationships and alliances. And for one unfortunate player, the twist creates a situation where the odds aren’t just stacked against her—there may be no way out. It’s a phenomenon Survivor fans call being swap screwed, and it raises a question about something we’ve all experienced: What do we do when the outcome is completely beyond our control? In this episode, we explore our very human desire to influence the direction of our lives, the frustration of having decisions made for us, and the surprising freedom that can come when there’s simply no room for second-guessing ourselves. We also consider how learning to hold things loosely, loosening our grip on outcomes, and choosing to see life’s unexpected turns as possible blessings in disguise can change the way we move forward—even when the circumstances themselves don’t change. Whether you watch Survivor or simply find human behavior fascinating, come geek out with me over the story behind the story. David vs. Goliath
What is it about the underdog that calls us to their corner? Welcome to Episode 3 of Undeniably Human, where we’re following Season 51 of Survivor as an unfolding human case study. This week, the odds get stacked dramatically against one tribe, setting the stage for a spectacular David vs. Goliath showdown. But that’s not the only underdog story unfolding. Back at camp, a band of misfits challenges a powerful alliance, turning the tables in an unexpected way. These two victories got me wondering: Why do we humans love rooting for the underdog? Is it our desire for fairness and justice, our instinct to seek a balance of power, or something even deeper? In this episode, we explore the psychology of cheering for the underdog, how these stories connect us to our own humanity, and why witnessing someone overcome seemingly impossible odds can inspire us to believe we can do the same. I also share the remarkable story of a friend who faced seemingly insurmountable odds, and a little wisdom from Samwise Gamgee of The Lord of the Rings that invites us to consider why stories of courage, perseverance, and overcoming have captivated humans for generations. Whether you watch Survivor or simply find human behavior fascinating, come geek out with me over the story behind the story. Paranoia Prognosis
What happens when an inner warning looks like paranoia—but might actually be your intuition at work? Welcome to Episode 2 of Undeniably Human, where we’re following Season 51 of Survivor as an unfolding human case study. This week, an overheard conversation at camp gets wildly misinterpreted and ultimately changes the direction of the game. What initially looks like classic Survivor paranoia raises a much more interesting question about intuition, confirmation, social risk, and self-trust. Often when humans sense that it’s time to leave, change direction, or take a risk, we wait for something outside of ourselves to confirm—or justify—what we already know. In this episode, I share my own personal experience in this area, plus explore the difference between paranoia and suspicion, our very human desire for external confirmation, and what happens when an unexpected catalyst finally gives us permission to act. And for kicks and giggles, there’s a severed fingertip, sleep-deprived scheming, and a few delightfully bizarre Survivor moments along the way. Whether you watch Survivor or simply find human behavior fascinating, come geek out with me over the story behind the story. Chaos and Opportunity
What if uncertainty isn’t just chaos—but an opportunity? Welcome to Season 1 of Undeniably Human, where we’re kicking things off with an unexpected case study in being human: Season 51 of Survivor. This season’s new Open Era begins with two charged words: permanent uncertainty. Almost immediately, players offer two very different interpretations of what that could mean—chaos or opportunity. In this episode, we look beyond the gameplay to explore the story behind the story: our instinct to seek certainty, how we connect with strangers, and what happens when we fear becoming the outsider. Two players become early targets for opposite reasons, opening up a bigger conversation about fitting in, belonging, authenticity, and our very human need for connection. Finally, I share something personal: the recent loss of my longtime dream of playing Survivor and the unexpected opportunity emerging from the chaos. Whether you watch Survivor or simply find human behavior fascinating, come geek out with me as we explore the mess, beauty, contradictions, chaos, and opportunity of being undeniably human.
