About Under the Surface
Under the Surface is a podcast about slowing down, tuning in, and reconnecting with the parts of ourselves we’ve learned to ignore, suppress, or overanalyze. Hosted by Sophia — a therapist in training (AMFT) and anxiety and somatic coach — this show explores what it means to build a more balanced relationship with your emotions, your body, and your inner world, especially in a culture that is externally focused and obsessed with productivity, certainty, and self-improvement. This podcast is an invitation to slow down, reconnect, and explore what’s underneath the surface.

The Fantasy of the Perfect Life: Why We Always Want More
This episode is about the fantasy of the perfect life. I talk about where it comes from, why so many of us get caught in it, and how it pulls us away from being present with ourselves and our actual lives. I explore how social media, perfectionism, and cultural messages (like the American Dream) feed this constant sense that we’re falling short, that something better is always out there, just out of reach. While fantasizing can be creative and even helpful, it can also become a way to avoid discomfort, numb out, or escape the parts of life that feel messy or imperfect. Together, we’ll unpack how to recognize when fantasizing is helping us move toward something meaningful, and when it’s pulling us away from ourselves. *** If you're looking for an anxiety coach to help you identify the beliefs and patterns that are keeping you stuck so you can reconnect with yourself and develop a more balanced relationship with your emotions and body, I'd love to work with you. Why We're So Burnt Out - And What Real Self-Care Actually Looks Like
Self-care is everywhere, from Instagram posts to therapy sessions, and Google searches. But if we have so much advice and information about it, why are we still so burnt out? How To Deeply Listen (And Why It's So Hard)
In today’s episode, I’m diving into what it really means to deeply listen, and why it’s so hard. I talk about how listening is more than just a communication skill; it’s really about presence, openness, and our willingness to be affected, and even changed. I explore some of the deeper fears that come up when we try to truly listen, like the fear of being wrong, the fear of losing control, or even the fear of losing ourselves. I also share a few personal stories — including an experience with a client during my internship, and a relationship I had in my early twenties — to show how listening can bring up old wounds around identity, self-worth, and belonging. This is a really honest and reflective episode where I go into how our culture, our upbringing, and our own emotional baggage can get in the way of us being fully present with others and with ourselves. And I talk about how listening can actually be a path back to connection and healing, both for ourselves and for the people in our lives. If you’ve ever felt resistant in a conversation, or found yourself shutting down or jumping to judgment, this episode might give you some space to reflect on what’s going on under the surface. If you want the support of an anxiety coach to help you reconnect with yourself and build a more balanced relationship with your emotions, I'd love to work with you. How I Process My Emotions
In this more vulnerable and unscripted episode of Under the Surface, I wanted to share something a little different: my actual emotional process—what it looks like in real time, from start to finish. As an anxiety coach and therapist-in-training, I spend a lot of time talking about how we can reconnect with our emotions and regulate our nervous systems. But I also know that hearing the theory isn’t always the same as seeing it in practice. So in this episode, I walk you through a real moment I experienced recently—one that triggered my perfectionism and left me feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and activated. You’ll hear how I moved through that experience: the thoughts that came up, the physical sensations I noticed, the resistance I felt, and the tools I used to come back to myself. I talk about breathwork, body awareness, emotional patterns, and the ongoing challenge of making space for our feelings—especially when we want to run from them. This episode is raw, reflective, and very human. It’s a reminder that slowing down, tuning in, and letting go of the pressure to "get it right" can be some of the hardest, but most healing, things we do. I hope it helps you feel a little less alone in your own process. –– If you're looking for an anxiety coach to help you reconnect with yourself and build a more balanced relationship with your emotions, I'd love to work with you. Anxious About the Unknown? Chasing Certainty Might Be Making It Worse
In a culture obsessed with answers, control, and doing things "right," chasing certainty can feel like the only way forward. But that chase is often what’s fueling our anxiety, perfectionism, and indecision. In this episode, we explore how the belief that there must be a “right” answer — to our decisions, careers, and relationships — keeps us stuck in fear and self-doubt. We’ll talk about the illusion of certainty and how letting go can lead to deeper peace.
