Before the new era of David's rule could begin, the old era had to end. It ended in a more terrible and decisive manner than anyone could expect, close to the place that later generations would call Armageddon.
But at his death, let us remember Saul. And amidst all his appalling acts and dreadful crimes, we need somehow, to find the space to assess his true greatness. The greatness that caused the men from Jabesh Gilead to risk their own lives to give him a proper burial. For Saul was loved, truly loved by Israel's people, and, as we shall see when we turn the page to read 2 Samuel 1, even by David himself, in spite of all that he had suffered at the hands of Saul.

Rescuing the captives - 1 Samuel 30 (KJV) explained
When the armies of Israel and the Philistines gathered for battle, they left their own countries dangerously exposed to attack. A large band of Amalekite men - famous as desert robbers - attacked and robbed several towns in the south of both countries. They attacked Ziklag, the home of David and his men, destroying it completely and taking hostage all its women and children.
At God's instruction, David set out on a rescue mission, although he did not know where to search for the robbers, who had retreated into the vast desert. David's men were exhausted, and a third of them were too tired even to join in the search for their own wives and children. It was an act of mercy towards a dying slave that provided the key information for the daring rescue attempt to proceed.

The battle David did not want to fight - 1 Samuel 29 (KJV) explained
David had foolishly allowed Achish, one of the Philistine kings, to think that he (David) now opposed Israel. The result was that Achish ordered David and his men to join Philistia's army for their battle against Saul.
It shocked the other Philistine kings to see that 600 men from Israel were in their own army. They were even more horrified to discover that David was leading them. They knew well David's reputation as a bold and effective fighter, and they did not trust him to remain loyal to them.
So immediately before the battle, David and his men were sent back home. There, they would discover the terrible consequences of calling out all the fighting men in both Philistia and Israel to the battle. Their mutual enemies, the Amalekites, had taken advantage of the opportunity to rob from towns across both nations. Ziklag, where David and his men lived, was attacked in an especially fierce manner.
