Before the Breakdown: How the "Strong Black Woman" Narrative Shapes Maternal Mental Health
Why are Black women expected to carry more, endure more, and ask for less?
In this inaugural episode of Undertones Media, host Kimberly Alleyne explores one of the most overlooked drivers of Black maternal health: the narratives that shape how Black women are treated before, during, and after pregnancy.
Joined by licensed professional counselor Nyrisha Hall, the conversation examines the "Strong Black Woman" narrative, postpartum depression, chronic stress, medical gaslighting, healthcare bias, generational trauma, and why prevention—not crisis response—must become the future of maternal healthcare.
Rather than focusing only on maternal mortality statistics, this episode asks a deeper question:
What stories create the conditions that place Black mothers at risk in the first place?
This conversation is part of Undertones Media's ongoing work investigating how narratives shape health, institutions, and public life.
