About Unlock your Imagination and Create with Impact!
Every month, sculptor and portrait artist Brian Dunn hunts one inner demon and unlocks one inner hero โ through clay, through story, and through showing up even when the monster has you paralyzed.
Sculptor's Quest is for busy adults who lost touch with their creativity and are ready to find it again. No experience needed. No perfection required. Just you, a block of clay, and the creative self that has been waiting to come back.
New episodes every Friday. The hunt is on. ๐
here we go, first week of the challenge, and I am working on just getting started. This week is all about getting started, starting to move the clay, and getting into the habit. No perfection here, just having fun, seeing where the clay goes, and not being held back.

If They Don't Like Me, At Least It's Actually Me | The Sculptor's Quest | M6 Ep.4
If They Don't Like Me, At Least It's Actually Me | The Sculptor's Quest | M6 Ep.4
What we cover this week:
The Grinning Thing is finished โ stitches added to the mask, base filled in, and the key detail: the mask is now permanently connected, never coming off
The Unveiling's detour โ building out a full figure down to the upper thighs to work out the anatomy, then deliberately cutting back down to a bust once the underlying structure was solid
Why the full-body build wasn't wasted effort โ it let the final cutline land somewhere that actually reads right, instead of an arbitrary spot
The new water base concept โ her stepping out of water at the hips, a rebirth image that still works within a bust format
The real reasoning behind taking off the mask โ protecting yourself from a persona being rejected vs. risking that you, specifically, might be
A reminder that removing the mask means access to a full emotional range โ anger, sadness, frustration โ not just a different single expression to replace the fake smile with
Key insight from this episode:
Wearing a mask feels safer because rejection lands on the mask instead of you. But that safety has a hidden cost: if people only ever meet the mask, nobody ever actually meets you โ which means even the love you do get was never really for you either. The Unveiling's whole arc is choosing the version of rejection that at least means something, over the version of acceptance that doesn't.
This week's action step:
Think of a mask you wear less to hide who you are, and more to protect yourself in case people don't like who you actually are. What would it cost to take it off anyway?

Same Smile, Every Day: The Mask Idea That Might Not Stick | The Sculptor's Quest | M6 Ep.3
What we cover this week:
The Grinning Thing gets shoulders, base, and a deliberately tilted head for extra unsettling character
A small intentional choice: the lumpy, unsmoothed back of his head stays rough on purpose, adding to the "gross creature" feel
The Unveiling gets hair, shoulders, chest, and eye work โ and an unresolved base problem given her larger head proportions
The new experimental idea: a row of masks behind each character, like faces on a wall
For The Unveiling: a range of masks โ happy, sad, upset, scared โ representing emotions she's starting to actually access
For The Grinning Thing: the exact same smiling mask repeated endlessly, no matter what he's actually feeling underneath
A reminder of the working process โ placing basic shapes for ears and hair early, then refining once the character's direction feels right
Key insight from this episode:
The difference between the demon and the hero isn't just what's on their face โ it's how many faces they're allowed to have. One character is discovering an entire range of honest expression. The other repeats the exact same performance daily, regardless of what's actually happening inside.
This week's action step:
Think about your own emotional range day to day. Is it closer to The Unveiling's wall of different masks, or The Grinning Thing's single repeated smile?
