Outsourcing the Backyard: How Youth Sports Stole Real Play
While waiting on his eighth-grade daughter’s athletic training session, Eric watched a group of 3 and 4 year-olds being run through technical soccer cone drills by a paid instructor while parents watched from folding chairs.
In this episode of Unlocked, Eric dives into the multibillion-dollar youth sports machine, the weaponization of parental FOMO, and the developmental dangers of trading free play for early compliance. When did kicking a ball in the yard become a paid monthly subscription?
Inside this episode:
The Backyard vs. The Academy: Why unstructured play builds better athletes than early cone drills.
Compliance vs. Creativity: How adult-driven micro-clinics condition kids to wait for permission instead of learning spatial awareness and problem-solving.
The Irony & The Line: Differentiating purposeful, age-appropriate athletic prep from toddler professionalization.
The Root of Intrinsic Drive: Why you can't fall in love with a drill—and how to protect your kid’s joy before the high school years arrive.
Grab a ball, head outside, and take the game back.

Stop Fixing the Person: Why the Room Is the Real Problem
Have you ever seen a talented athlete or a hard-working employee suddenly lose their way? It is easy to label someone as having an attitude problem, but the truth is often much deeper than a simple character flaw. In this episode of Unlocked, Coach Eric explores why we need to stop blaming individuals and start looking at the environments they are standing in.
Whether it is a locker room, a corporate office, or a family home, toxic systems often manufacture the very behaviors we criticize. When we see a person become defensive, quiet, or inconsistent, we are often witnessing them absorb the toxicity of the room around them. This video breaks down the concept of credit and blame asymmetry, where systems take all the credit for success but shift the blame onto individuals the moment things go wrong.
Coach Eric provides a practical three-question test to help you determine if a person is truly the problem or if the environment is to blame. By asking if the person has functioned well elsewhere and if the same issues keep appearing across different people, you can uncover the truth about the culture you are part of. It is time to stop trying to fix the person and start fixing the room.

Public Enemy Number One (And the Most Inclusive Thing at Your School)
As the season kicks off, Coach Eric tackles the strangest contradiction in high school sports: football is the program the anti-sports crowd loves to hate, and they've got real reasons — the resources it eats, the time it demands, the old-school culture it still clings to, the injuries. But it's also the one thing at most schools that pulls in almost everybody, from the marching band and cheer squad to the art kids painting banners to the elementary schoolers marching in the homecoming parade. A candid look at why the "most evil" sport in the building might also be its biggest melting pot — and why both things can be true at once.
If you want a shorter platform blurb for the episode card (Spotify sometimes truncates hard around 150-200 characters in previews), here's a tighter version you can use for that:
Football gets called public enemy number one by the anti-sports crowd, and they've got a point. So why is it also the most inclusive thing your school does all year? Coach Eric digs into the contradiction.
