#56 - Brewing Tradition: The Story Behind BarrieHaus Beer Co.
Some breweries are built on trends. This one is built on family history spanning more than 150 years. In this episode of Unlocking Tampa Bay, hosts Bryan Burns and Molly Barbieri head to BarrieHaus Beer Co. in Ybor City, where co-owner and director of hoperations Brittney Barrie shares the story behind the brewery she opened with her husband, head brewer Jim Barrie. Jim's family has been brewing since the 1800s, when his great-great-great-grandfather Philip Kling founded Peninsular Brewing in Michigan, a tradition later carried on by relatives at Tivoli Brewing. Today, Jim carries that legacy forward, having turned a home brewing operation into BarrieHaus.
Brittney walks us through BarrieHaus's lineup of lagers, the style the brewery specializes in and has built its reputation on. Their Czech-style Pilsner, Bublina, took home gold at the 2024 World Beer Cup, their Vienna Lager, Family Tradition, won gold at the 2022 World Beer Cup, and their German-style Gold Lager, Tampa Export, earned gold at the 2023 Brewer's Ball. She also shows off BarrieHaus's imported Czech side-pull faucets, which create the traditional Hladinka, Šnyt, and Mlíko pours, each offering a different balance of beer and dense, creamy foam.
From behind the bar to the production floor, Brittney takes us into the brewery itself, showing off the tanks and breaking down exactly how beer goes from grain to glass.
