A Deadly Combo: Jesus on Fasting and New Wineskins | Mark 2:18–22 (Week 9)

Why did Jesus defend His disciples for not fasting when John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting? What did Jesus mean by putting new wine into old wineskins? And why is mixing God's perfect Word with human religious traditions such a deadly combination? In Week 9 of Prepare the Way, Pastor Kevin M. Kelley examines Mark 2:18–22, revealing the dangerous incompatibility between the pure Gospel of Jesus Christ and the self-righteous, man-made religious systems that seek to distort, dilute, and replace God's unchanging truth. When King Jesus is confronted about His disciples' failure to fast, He responds with three powerful illustrations: the bridegroom at a wedding celebration, an unshrunk patch on an old garment, and new wine poured into old wineskins. Each reveals the folly of attempting to incorporate the glorious Gospel into the rigid, broken framework of human religious traditions. Jesus didn't come to patch up corrupted religious systems, accommodate self-righteousness, or blend God's Word with human philosophies. He came to rescue and redeem sinners, calling them to repentance, spiritual regeneration, and a completely new identity in Christ. As the promised Bridegroom, Jesus calls His people to abandon the filthy garments of self-righteousness and be clothed in His righteousness, prepared for the wedding banquet of the Lamb. This expository Bible sermon examines the biblical purpose of fasting, the dangers of legalism, the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, and the incompatibility of salvation by grace through faith with man-made religious requirements. Drawing upon Isaiah 58, Zechariah 7, and Revelation 19, Pastor Kevin confronts counterfeit Christianity, works-based righteousness, false teaching, and the spiritual consequences of mixing divine revelation with human traditions. The Pharisees were so committed to preserving their religious system that they failed to recognize the promised Messiah standing before them. Their obsession with outward conformity blinded them to the glorious truth of the Gospel. The question is simple: Are you clinging to the old, stained garments of religious tradition—or have you truly become a new creation in Christ, clothed in His righteousness and prepared for the wedding banquet of the Lamb?
