About Up Your Nerd Cred

Did you used to know everything happening in the Marvel and DC universes? Did finding out that some superheroes are from Marvel and some are from DC blow your mind? Has keeping track of everything happening there… and then realizing we’re talking about the comics universe, not the cinematic ones… and the different universes with their own multiversal crisesses has gotten a little bit out of hand, don’t worry. Up Your Nerd Cred is here to talk about gods cosplaying as men, men cosplaying as gods, and how much the cinematic universes are leaving out.

Kurt Wagner: What Is Family, If Not… | UYNC S3 Ep 17

AM takes the mic for his first solo episode and goes straight for his favorite fuzzy blue elf. Part 1 traces Nightcrawler from Dave Cockrum’s pre-Marvel concept into Giant-Size X-Men #1, then digs into Kurt Wagner’s powers, faith, circus upbringing, and increasingly chaotic family tree—from Margali and Jimaine to Mystique, Rogue, Azazel, Destiny, and the modern answer to who Kurt’s parents actually are. With Friends Like These... Evil Leagues of Evil | UYNC S3 Ep 16

With friends like these, who needs enemies? Even villains know teamwork can be useful. The problem is getting a room full of independently powerful bad guys to agree on what winning actually looks like. With the Guardians and Green Lantern Corps fresh in our minds after Lanterns, CiCi and AM Diaz take on the supervillain group project from hell. When is a villain team an organized operation, and when is it a collection of egos wearing the same logo? We get into the Legion of Doom and Lex Luthor's limited ability to boss around other villains; Doctor Octopus and the Sinister Six, where everybody wants Spider-Man defeated but nobody wants someone else to get the win; the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, whose members don't necessarily share Magneto's goals; and the Masters of Evil, where the person lower in the hierarchy is usually the one stuck taking the L. From Skeletor's minions to Hydra's unlucky henchpeople, we're asking whether a shared enemy is enough to make a team—and what happens when the plan succeeds but the villains still disagree about who deserves credit. What villain team do you think actually knows how to work together? Don't Worry-He's Only "Mostly Dead" | UYNC S3 Ep 15

Nobody stays dead in comics… except Bucky, Jason Todd, and Uncle Ben. Well. About that. This week, CiCi is getting into the many, many flavors of comic-book death: actually dead, presumed dead, retconned dead, resurrected, restored, undead, and “technically I survived the explosion, but things have not exactly been going great since.” We’re looking at what happened when Superman died—and why bringing him back didn’t erase what happened while he was gone. Then we get into Marvel Zombies, DCeased, and Blackest Night before asking the most important question in superhero medicine: did anybody actually see a body? From there, we’re talking Jason Todd’s extremely complicated road from Robin to Red Hood, including the reader vote that killed him, the explosion that actually did it, and the reality-warping/Lazarus Pit mess that eventually brought him back. Then there’s Bucky Barnes, whose famous death turned out to be a decades-long case of “actually, he survived,” and Uncle Ben, who is currently doing most of the heavy lifting for the concept of staying dead. Because maybe the question isn’t whether a character can come back. Maybe it’s whether their death still matters after they do. A couple of nerdy housekeeping notes: Bucky Barnes debuted in Captain America Comics #1 (1941)—CiCi shortened that to “Captain America #1” while recording. And during You’ve Got Issues, CiCi managed to hold up and discuss The Lady or the Tiger? and Other Logic Puzzles without actually saying its author’s name. The book is by Raymond Smullyan, and we apologize to Professor Smullyan’s ghost for discussing a book about logical reasoning while neglecting one extremely relevant fact.
