US Open Tennis 2024: Djokovic, Alcaraz Lead Stacked Men's and Women's Draw
The US Open, the season’s final Grand Slam, returns to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York with storylines dominated by generational change, record chases, and the rise of new contenders across both tours.
According to the USTA’s official US Open information, the tournament retains its traditional late‑summer slot in New York, with day and night sessions in Arthur Ashe Stadium and a 128‑player singles draw for men and women. The event continues to use hard courts (DecoTurf) and electronic line‑calling on all main courts, following the phase‑out of on‑court line judges in recent years.
On the men’s side, ATP Tour previews and recent hard‑court form point to a familiar cluster of favorites. Novak Djokovic, still chasing additional Grand Slam singles titles and extending his records in New York, remains the reference point whenever he enters the draw. ATP analysis notes that Carlos Alcaraz, the 2022 US Open champion, arrives as the most credible threat from the younger generation, with his aggressive all‑court game historically well‑suited to the fast New York hard courts. Jannik Sinner’s improved serve and baseline consistency have also elevated him into the inner circle of favorites, especially after his breakthrough Slam results on other surfaces.
Hard‑court results over the last 12 months highlight a wider pack of contenders. According to ATP match reports, players such as Daniil Medvedev (the 2021 champion), Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, and Stefanos Tsitsipas have all produced deep runs on North American hard courts, suggesting a men’s field that is deeper than the headline rivalry between Djokovic and Alcaraz. Fitness will be central: the five‑set format and humid conditions in New York have historically rewarded durable baseliners with big first serves and reliable backhands.
On the women’s side, WTA coverage emphasizes a more open field with several realistic champions. Iga Świątek, already a multiple major winner, has steadily improved on hard courts and has previously lifted the trophy in New York, combining heavy topspin with superb defense. According to WTA Tennis features, Aryna Sabalenka’s power and first‑strike game make her especially dangerous at the US Open, where the quick surface amplifies her serve and return; she has become a fixture in the late rounds at hard‑court majors. Coco Gauff, buoyed by strong results on North American hard courts and her historic 2023 title in New York, remains a central figure for the home crowd.
Recent WTA reporting also highlights Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula as key threats: Rybakina’s flat power can overwhelm opponents in night conditions, while Pegula’s consistency and doubles prowess make her a tough out on these courts. Donna Vekić’s resurgence, showcased in her Queen’s 2026 title run as documented by WTA Tennis, reinforces the sense that a broader group of women have the level to break through in New York if they catch form over two weeks.
Doubles remains an important part of the US Open narrative. ATP and WTA doubles updates point to established teams continuing to dominate, but mixed doubles and the ever‑popular night‑session doubles matches often produce upsets and showcase specialists who rarely appear on the main stadium court in singles.
Off the court, the USTA has continued to expand fan‑experience initiatives. Tournament information highlights the use of the sprawling grounds for interactive fan zones, practice‑court viewing, and expanded food and entertainment offerings, keeping the US Open’s reputation as both a tennis event and a cultural spectacle. Broadcast partners and digital platforms deliver comprehensive coverage, with live streams, detailed statistics, and on‑court audio bringing viewers closer to the action.
Looking ahead, media discussion across ATP and WTA platforms frames this US Open as a crossroads: the veterans, led by Djokovic, still contend for history, while a deep roster of younger stars on both tours seeks to claim or consolidate Grand Slam dominance in the sport’s loudest, most demanding arena.
