   E4: Circling Joe Cool

Step aboard a sun-drenched charter that sailed straight out of the marina and right into a nightmare on the open ocean. In Episode 4 of The Sinking Ship, Vada Greer dives into the grim and darkly disturbing tale of the Joe Cool. When a desperate embezzler running from his past and a teenage gun slinger obsessed with playing secret agent charter a luxury 47-foot fishing yacht under false pretenses, they trade a tropical getaway for cold-blooded slaughter. But karma has a cruel sense of humor, and after executing an innocent family and crew in cold blood, these two masterminds manage to choke the yacht's engines into a permanent, silent drift—leaving them bobbing in a rubber dinghy with zero survival skills and a very long comeuppance with the Coast Guard. “With so few people aboard, it was very quiet. There was just a subtle clink and clang of equipment and waves.” - Vada Greer, Circling Joe Cool Keywords: True Crime Podcasts, The Joe Cool Massacre, Kirby Archer, Guillermo Zarabozo, Miami True Crime, Boat Murders, Bahamas Charter Boat Crime, Dark Comedy True Crime, Vada Greer, The Sinking Ship Podcast, True Crime Narratives, Maritime Crimes

   E3: Mean Girls Mutiny

A hundred-foot brig. Over a hundred souls, many of them teenage boys. Zero privacy, and even less patience. In 1842, the U.S. Navy's radical new officer-training experiment aboard the USS Somers turned into a floating pressure cooker when a Senator’s troubled son allegedly hatched a plot to murder the captain, seize the ship, and go pirating in the Caribbean. What followed was paranoia, a book full of coded secrets, and a captain who decided the only safe answer was three men hanging from the yardarm — with no trial, no jury, and precious little proof beyond a terrified steward's testimony. Join host Vada Greer as we trace The Somers affair from a whispered threat belowdecks to a very public execution at sea, the acquittal that split the country, the fraternity that still claims it was all a misunderstanding, and the eerie shadow it cast over one of America's greatest institutions. “He was a tight buttoned buzz kill who preferred order and efficiency to frivolity.” - Vada Greer, Mean Girls Mutiny Keywords: USS Somers mutiny, Philip Spencer hanging, Alexander Slidell Mackenzie, Somers Affair 1842, Samuel Cromwell Elisha Small, naval mutiny history, Guert Gansevoort, Herman Melville Billy Budd, Chi Psi fraternity Somers, US Navy hanging without trial, true crime maritime history, Vada Greer Sinking Ship, historical shipwrecks Veracruz, naval court martial 1843, US Naval Academy origins

   Bonus: Barnaby on Bourbon Street

When a torrential downpour hits Bourbon Street, an eclectic crew of New Orleans insects—including an ancient, cynical cockroach named Kurt, a wildly overconfident green lacewing named Barnaby, three chaotic larval trash bugs, and a terrified carpenter ant named Arthur—find themselves taking shelter under a soggy CVS receipt. What starts as a desperate struggle for survival against rising gutter rapids and tourist sneaker tsunamis quickly spirals into a full-scale microscopic epic. As tensions flare and loyalties are tested, the journey takes a sharp turn from dark comedic absurdity into Greek tragedy. Tune in for an unforgettable tale of tactical deployments, unexpected losses, and a crusty veteran cockroach who unexpectedly finds himself adopting a new family of delinquents. "To some, it was a storm. To others, it was the end of the world." - Vada Greer, Barnaby on Bourbon Street Keywords: The Sinking Ship podcast, Vada Greer, Bourbon Street, New Orleans fiction, dark comedy podcast, audio drama, narrative storytelling, fictional storytelling, fictional true crime parody, dark humor podcast, absurdist fiction, quirky storytelling, narrative fiction, indie fiction podcast, atmospheric storytelling, character-driven fiction, creative writing podcast, original fiction podcast, dark comedy fiction, satirical storytelling, murder, bugs

   E2: The Sleeping Lady

Tucked away in the emerald-green mountains of northern Thailand is a majestic labyrinth called the The Sleeping Lady. It is gorgeous, ancient, and deeply sacred in local folklore. But during the monsoon season, this place doesn’t just get wet. It swallows rain in sheets, turning miles of jagged, subterranean tunnels into a roaring, high-pressure washing machine with zero visibility and a maze of tunnels leading to a tiny beach with mile high limestone steps. It was June 23, 2018. Twelve boys from the Wild Boars youth soccer team and their coach hopped on their bicycles after a game to do what locals had done for generations: duck inside the mouth of the cave for a quick, innocent exploration. Except, the monsoon season didn't wait for their calendar. Flash floods slammed into the mountainside, pouring millions of gallons of muddy water straight into the cave system and trapping the boys two and a half miles underground on a muddy sliver of rock. What followed was a seventeen-day stretch of total, suffocating silence in the dark, a rescue math problem that looked like pure suicide, and a high-stakes, ketamine-laced medical gamble that required diplomatic immunity. Join host Vada Greer for The Sinking Ship as we trace the miraculous underwater extraction of the Wild Boars, the titanium-nerved British divers who found them, and the ultimate price exacted by the mountain. E1: Subs for Money, Chicks for Free

Tucked away in a heavily guarded, freezing corner of the Gulf of Finland sits Kotlin Island—a stoic, armored graveyard of weathered steel gates and decaying Soviet warships. But don't let the gray Baltic fog fool you. This restricted naval fortress has a history of selling Cold War weapons of mass destruction to the highest bidder. At the same time Vanilla Ice was dropping ‘To the Extreme’ and running the neon-soaked streets of South Florida, a bizarre criminal alliance was cementing itself in the dark VIP rooms of a raunchy Miami strip club called Porky’s. What began as a friendship between a rowdy Russian defector and a slick luxury car salesman quickly transformed into an international black-market conspiracy, culminating in a mind-boggling mission to sell a $35 million submarine to the Colombian Cartel. Join host Vada Greer for The Sinking Ship’s first episode as we trace the high-stakes history of a radar resistant submersible, the terrifying whine of jet-turbine racing boats cutting through Biscayne Bay, the devastating sting of an international double-cross, and the thousands of hours of federal wiretaps that brought Operation Odessa crashing down. Pilot: Muff & Mac in Paradise

Palmyra Atoll looks like a quiet, postcard-perfect tropical paradise, but its pristine shores hide a dark history of driving wartime soldiers mad, swallowing airplanes, and serving as the backdrop for an eerie true-crime mystery. While Jaws was taking over movie theaters, a wealthy Southern California couple, Muff and Mac Graham, sailed their luxury yacht, the Sea Wind, to the remote island for an off-the-grid getaway. They expected total isolation, but instead encountered a pair of desperate, starving drug-running drifters who were trapped in the jungle with a broken boat and growing animosity. In this pilot episode of The Sinking Ship, host Vada Greer dives into the chilling, surreal account of the Grahams' sudden disappearance and the island's ultimate reckoning. The episode traces the shocking discovery of the Sea Wind repurposed by the drifters in a Hawaiian harbor, the complex loopholes of maritime law that initially stalled justice, and the powerful tropical storm years later that forced the ocean to finally cough up the gruesome truth. Join us as we explore how this magnificent but deceptive graveyard of an atoll protects its secrets—and how it eventually exacts its own fierce payback.
