Each week this fall, Head of School Nathan Colestock reads a short article on who Valor is and where it is going — our mission, our doctrine, and the kind of graduates we mean to raise.
Doctrinal Distinctive 2: God’s good design for men, women, and children
We’re partnering with parents to help raise children with valor. Valor, like every virtue, is good because it reflects who God is. There is no such thing as human virtue that is not expressed in either masculine or feminine ways.
God’s meticulous sovereignty. God controls everything. There are no accidents. History, past and present, is the record of God’s intentional actions. His sovereignty over all things inspires us to worship, trust, and obey him. We want to trust God when suffering comes and glorify God by enjoying him and his gifts.

Mission: To glorify God in all of life
God made everything for his glory. Everything exists to show off what God is like, and as a reason for us to praise him. If everything exists for God’s glory, teaching any subject disconnected from God is treachery. God’s glory is not an “add on” to our mission statement, it’s the whole point. At Valor, we want our students to glorify God from the factory floor to the senate floor, from the board room to the living room.

Mission: with the classical tradition
There is no truly classical education that isn’t thoroughly Christian. “Classical” is not a synonym for “rigorous.” Nor does it simply mean an education in the classic literature of the Western world. Classical education retrieves the seven liberal arts reformed by our forefathers in the faith during the medieval era. Those Christian scholars created an educational system from the seven liberal arts whose purpose was to teach subsequent generations to see Christ as preeminent in all things (Col 1:18) and that all things hold together in Christ (Col 1:17). Its goal was to create, perpetuate, and expand Christian culture so that the gospel which saves sinners would also transform civilizations.

Mission: Educate and Enculturate
Since God made mankind to rule, God-honoring schooling prepares students to rule well. That’s why Valor strives to equip students to walk in a manner worthy of their calling (Eph 4:1). To be prepared to rule, students need to receive a body of knowledge and a way of life. That’s why our mission is to educate and enculturate students in Christ.

Vision for Valor
The Christian way of life is never more than one generation from extinction. If our beliefs and traditions are not purposefully passed to our children, they die with us. That’s why education is essential. Education is the catapult with which we launch skilled builders and brave soldiers into the future to glorify God in all of life (1 Cor 10:31). The vision for Valor is to be a community of parents united in our common commitment to raise our children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Eph 6:4) instead of according to secular dogma. We want to be a community where doing things God’s way is normal.
