Off-Season Heat Strains the East as Data-Center Rules Harden
North American wholesale power markets were defined this week by a brief but genuine reliability scare in the East rather than by the calendar. Unseasonable mid-October warmth collided with the year's heaviest autumn generator maintenance to produce the week's pivotal day on October 13. In PJM, roughly 46 GW of planned and about 60 GW of total generation sat offline, pushing effective load to approximately 167 GW even as actual demand peaked near only 108 GW; real-time prices at the Western Hub briefly topped about $1,500/MWh, and the U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order allowing units to run past environmental limits through October 16. MISO declared Conservative Operations the same day, set a record effective load near 135 GW and saw Indiana Hub prices around $1,000/MWh, which limited the help it could send a more stressed PJM. The contrast elsewhere was stark: ERCOT ran mild and wind-rich to the point of curtailment, while CAISO managed wildfire-driven public-safety power shutoffs rather than load, underscoring how localized this strain was.

DOE’s Reconductoring Bet
The most consequential U.S. electric-power development this week concerned neither a new power plant nor a high-voltage corridor. It concerned the wires already in place. On October 13, the U.S. Department of Energy announced a roughly $581 million grid-expansion package centered on the Tennessee Valley Authority. The award shows that Washington’s near-term response to surging electricity demand will include increasing the capacity of transmission infrastructure already in service. The amount is modest compared with the hundreds of billions of dollars associated with data centers and new generation, but the approach matters. This funding round is devoted to gaining relatively fast, low-cost transmission capacity by upgrading existing lines.

You Think You're Giving Feedback. Your Team Disagrees.
Friday is Boss's Day, when teams may pass around a card or bring in a sheet cake. A more useful gesture would be to find out whether the feedback managers believe they provide is reaching employees as intended.
The numbers suggest that most employees do not experience feedback as often as their managers believe they provide it. When Gallup asked 2,729 managers and 12,710 individual contributors across the U.S. to rate the same 20 management behaviors, the largest divide appeared on one simple question: How often does feedback happen? About half of managers said they give feedback every week, but only one in five employees said they receive it that often. The two groups are describing the same working relationship very differently.
