Poté pracoval na ústavu Akademie věd ČR a tři roky strávil na Newyorské státní univerzitě ve Stony Brook. Téměř dvacet let působil jako ředitel Ústavu experimentální biologie a doposud pracuje a vyučuje na přírodovědecké fakultě MUNI.
