Kurt Schwitters hat heute Geburtstag. Das ist für mich Anlass, einen seiner weniger bekannten Texte vorzustellen. In ihm verabschiedet der Maler und Dichter einen toten Kritiker. Er ist tot heißt: Er ist nicht bereit, sich auf Schwitters moderne MERZ-Kunst einzulassen. Sondern er maßt sich an, über etwas zu urteilen, das außerhalb seines Erfahrungshorizontes liegt. Kommt Euch das bekannt vor? Wenn jemand moderne Literatur nicht versteht, mag er sie beiseite legen. Sie dennoch zu beurteilen, ist anmaßend. Gegen diese Anmaßung wehrt sich Schwitters, indem er in Form einer Kritiker-Kritik zum Anlass seinen Standpunkt humorvoll erklärt und zugleich in Frage stellt. Denn wahre Künstler zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sie mit Meinungen spielen, statt bloß eine zu haben.
