VK004 - Charakterfragen: Three Body Problem
In dieser Folge holt Katharin etwas weiter aus, um anhand der chinesischen und der US-amerikanischen Serienadapation von Liu Cixins »The Three Body Problem« die technologischen Herausforderungen bei der Darstellung chinesischer Schriftzeichen auf Computerbildschirmen auszuarbeiten. Was in der Serie historisch falsch gezeigt wird, war Jahrzehnte lang ein kaum lösbares Problem zu kleiner Computeranlagen - für eine Sprache mit tausenden Schriftsymbolen. Caspar greift den Faden auf und präsentiert spontan einen eigenen Fund in der US-amerikanischen Netflix-Version von The Three Body Problem, in der auf einem betagten IBM-Terminal zwischen Magnetbändern plötzlich ein Mauszeiger umhergeistert. Und dann ist da noch eine generelle Kulturkritik an der »Alienation« chinesischer Kultur in der US-Version und unverständlischer Fehler bei der Präsentation von Technologie im Kontext eines "hard sci-fi" Romans.

VK002: »Balkan Cyberia« - Großrechner hinter dem Eisernen Vorhang
In der zweiten Folge von Versionskontrolle bringt Katharin ein 2023 bei MIT Press erschienes Buch mit: Balkan Cyberia von Victor Petrov. Ausgehend von einem Buch, das die wenig bekannte bulgarische Computerindustrie hinter dem "Eisernen Vorhang" beleuchtet und damit die bekannte Robotron-Erzählung ergänzt, untersuchen wir die Möglichkeit einer alternativen Geschichte der Digitalisierung. Dabei stellen wir uns die Frage, ob der Begriff "Alternativgeschichte" überhaupt verwendet werden darf. Während Geschichtsschreibung oft aus einer westlichen oder US-amerikanischen Perspektive verfasst und gelesen wird, gibt es eine wachsende alternative Perspektive, die sich von dieser traditionellen Historie löst und wenig bekannte Kapitel zum Beispiel aus Osteuropa und Asien beleuchtet. Das Buch von Petrov, das als OpenAccess-Titel verfügbar ist, kann erfreulicherweise kostenlos als PDF gelesen werden.
