When you think about what you want most in life, what comes to mind? A better future for your children? A better job? A new home?
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus points us toward a deeper longing, a better way:

Poor in Spirit — Matthew 5:1-3
Life with Jesus is marked by peaks and valleys.
One moment everything is great, and the next you find yourself in an unexpected season, questioning the very goodness of God. Someone betrays you, you lose a job, or people walk out of your life. And you're left asking how do I remain in the safety of God’s plan, when life feels so chaotic?
As we open up the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes this Sunday in Matthew 5, Jesus is showing us a new way of life. It is a life that is steady even when life is unsteady. But it is a life that you and I cannot step into on our own. This is why Jesus’ opening line is, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
