Eps. #016: The System w/attorney Reyna Lubin
The ladies welcome the wonderful, diligent and insanely committed Reyna Lubin (@reynalubin). Reyna is a former Assistant District Attorney for the domestic violence bureau of the King's County District Attorney's Office in Brooklyn, NY. It was here that she first connected with Brittany and the two have stayed in touch since working together in 2017. Reyna was assigned to Britt's case and went above and beyond to guide her through a tricky judicial system and get her the protection she needed. At the D.A.'s office, Reyna handled more than 2,000 cases of crimes involving intimate partner violence, and she provides listeners with an inside look at legal classifications of domestic violence, the process of pursuing your justice and advice on what to do during every step of an abusive situation. Reyna now works as a private civil rights attorney where she handles discrimination cases on the basis of race, sex and disability. She also produces her own podcast, The Link Up (@the.link.up) which covers women's issues in and out of the workplace. - - - - - - - - - - A comedic podcast about domestic violence, dating, sex and sisterhood hosted by Onika McLean (@divaofcomedy) and Brittany Brave (@brittanybrave.) Eps. #015: The SAD, BAD (but HILARIOUS) History of DV w/Nevertheless She Existed
Onika and Britt had a big, on-air fight. Can you feel it? Just last week they were agreeing to a domestic partnership and now the honeymoon phase is dead and gone. We'll spare you the details and skip ahead to the make-up sex (the actual episode and another giveaway of @_myplusone goodies), but damn, relationships are hard! Thankfully, they make up just in time to welcome the fabulous Kylie Holloway and Molly Gaebe, hosts of Caveat's femme-fueled podcast, Nevertheless She Existed. Get ready to be straight-up SCHOOLED on the "SAD and BAD" history of domestic violence reparations in the U.S. and beyond. We go way back, too, starting with Adam and Eve, Queen Elizabeth and the horrific origin story of the phrase "Rule of Thumb." We circle back to 2020 and the now-"unconstitutional" Violence Against Women Act and share some honest stories in the process. See how much history has evolved, or lack thereof, in one of our FUNNIEST and SMARTEST episodes to date. Make a drinking game out of it! Take a shot every time women take one step forward. Take two every time they take 14 steps back. Plus, Brittany's new side hustle, Onika's bribe and a little tea. - - - - - - - - - - A comedic podcast about domestic violence, dating, sex and sisterhood hosted by Onika McLean (@divaofcomedy) and Brittany Brave (@brittanybrave.) Eps. #014: The One Where Everyone Cries w/Hope Alcocer
Warning: This episode of Violently Funny contains graphic descriptions of domestic violence and physical abuse, as well as strong language. Listener discretion is advised. - - - - - - - - - - Welp, it finally happened: Onika and Britt cried. In their most vulnerable and candid episode yet, the ladies welcome one of Brittany's best friends, Hope Alcocer (@hopealcocer.) Hope is an author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker, and recently had an early battle with domestic violence resurface. In every way she communicates and lives, Hope carries an unmatched conviction and level of eloquence and has done the tough work to fully understand and process her experiences with DV. It shows in her commentary on trauma-bonding, self-love and recovery. Don't worry! The taping was a full-on GIRLS NIGHT so the episode is still very funny and equipped with plenty of the usual loud ridiculousness Violently Funny delivers. But the girls get into it, and if you're comfortable listening, it's an example of the growth that comes from facing your shit head on and making it to the other side. - - - - - - - - - - A podcast about domestic violence, dating, sex and sisterhood hosted by comedians Onika McLean (@divaofcomedy) and Brittany Brave (@brittanybrave.) We did it live and we did it big for Safe Horizon, raising over $1K for the nation's largest victim services organization. For those who missed it, peep our very first live recording, featuring a comedy panel with Ariel Leaty, Minnie Scarlet, Rosa Escandon and Sarah Garner, music from Lexi Todd, an expert interview with Safe Horizon's Shanequa Holiday and the ridiculousness of your two favorite co-hosts. Eps. #012: Growing Up with Trauma feat. Katherine Shaw
Brittany comes down with the plague and the ladies are busy planning for their live show so this week's episode comes a little late. Nonetheless, Onika and Britt hit their 1-year anniversary and reflect on gratitude and their partnership before welcoming their first remote guest, Katherine Shaw from Portland, OR! Katherine is not only a comedy writer for The Syndrome Mag and Weekly Humorist, but studied domestic violence in undergrad and has a master's degree in trauma rehabilitation. As a survivor, Katherine committed herself to understanding DV through academia as a means to help others and understand her own experience. The episode does a deep dive into alcoholism, parenting, manic depressive disorder, universal attachment styles and finding intimacy in the wake of abuse. - - - - - - - - - - A podcast about domestic violence, dating, sex and sisterhood hosted by comedians and survivors Onika McLean (@divaofcomedy) and Brittany Brave (@brittanybrave.) Eps #011: The Catch Up + Season 2 Premiere
Happy 2020, Happy Season 2 and not-so-happy Onika and Britt. Real talk: the ladies start the new year SAD. It was a crazy holiday season filled with a lot of unexpected pain and growth, and your hosts are caught in the Abuse Funk and trying to crack their Break-up Addictions (we're coining our own terminology now like the experts we are. Duh.) Instead of fighting it, they sat in those feelings. Plus... defining what it means to be your own boyfriend, how to quiet your ego and the all-too-familiar process of glorifying victimization. It's a lot, but it inspires Onika and Britt to own their darkness. Hopefully it inspires you to do the same. - - - - - - - - - - If you or someone you know is in a dangerous situation and you suspect there is abuse, please contact 9-1-1 or call 1-800-799-7233. - - - - - - - - - - Feel free to contact violentlyfunnypodcast@gmail.com or DM Onika (@onikadmclean) or Britt (@brittanybrave) if you need help or have a story to share. #010: Your Feelings? Your Problem w/porn star Minnie Scarlet
Our season 1 finale brings listeners into Onika's Brooklyn abode as the crew records over a full spread of mimosas, grits, donuts, bacon and...... lobster (naturally.) The ladies talk holiday plans, blowing U.S. presidents, being selfish VS. being self-centered before welcoming pornstar/comedian Minnie Scarlet (@minniescarlet) for a raw and enlightening conversation. Minnie is savvy, hard-working and fucking fierce. She shares an inside look at the world of sex work, where she not only built a career, but discovered a newfound sense of community with other women. Plus societal control over female sexuality, love-bombing, isolation and being entirely responsible for your own feelings --- and no one else's. - - - - - - - - - - A podcast about domestic violence, dating, sex and sisterhood hosted by comedians and survivors Onika McLean (@divaofcomedy) and Brittany Brave (@brittanybrave.) #009: Only Sweat the Big Stuff w/Dr. Georgia Witkin
Brittany makes her way back to family court to renew her order of protection. She fights the good fight for 6 hours. She did her best to make light of the situation and expose the reality of the judicial system's treatment on victims. Between her process and our guest interview, it's a doozy, and the timing couldn't be more perfect for the ladies to welcome the indefatigable Dr. Georgia Witkin. Dr. Witkin has been featured on CBS, CNBC and NBC, leads psychiatry and OBGYN studies at Mount Sinai NY, has penned 13 books on female stress and is a vocal advocate for emotional abuse awareness and women around the world. Both her story and career are remarkable and make for a wildly insightful episode on health and wellbeing, remembering to "only sweat the big stuff" and more. And of course, the ladies dole out another round's worth of PlusOne (@_myplusone) toys for some lucky winners! - - - - - - - - - - A podcast about domestic violence, dating, sex and sisterhood hosted by comedians and survivors Onika McLean (@divaofcomedy) and Brittany Brave (@brittanybrave.) #008: Conversations for Clarity w/Onika and Britt
Every few guests, Onika and Britt check-in with each other for The Catch Up, a series of conversations in the name of clarity and sisterhood. Things come full circle for Brittany as she nears the expiration date for her order of protection against her abuser. She gears up for another confrontation with the judicial system for the first time in two years. Not to mention, all the un-pretty feelings that come with it. Onika gets real about checking your crazy and trusting yourself. The ladies continue to make their producer, Adam, vaguely uncomfortable (we can't help it, he's a good-looking dude) and reallllly spill. Last but not least, they announce the winners for round 1 of their PlusOne (@_myplusone) giveaway and kick off round 2 all in the spirit of giving. - - - - - - - - - - A podcast about domestic violence, dating, sex and sisterhood hosted by comedians and survivors Onika McLean (@divaofcomedy) and Brittany Brave (@brittanybrave.) #007: Triumph Over Transition w/Ericka Pittman
The ladies welcome media and publishing mogul (and one of Onika's longtime childhood friends) Ericka Pittman (@erickampittman). Talk about fierce. Ericka sets such a great example by selflessly lending wisdom to younger women, most notably in her forthcoming book 'What Mommy Never Told You: A Woman's Guide to the Next Phases of Life' out January 2020. We get into power moves, career politics, beauty and aesthetics, and finding the balance between fighting for yourself and looking out for others. AND, right in time for the season of giving, Onika and Britt kick off a special PlusOne (@_myplusone) giveaway for listeners to spread that self-love. Week 3, Onika and Britt are back on their bullshit! The pair welcome the incredible Lexi Todd to talk healing through art and introduce listeners to their future husbands Chad and Harold (a wild tale of white boys.) Everything Lexi does oozes authenticity and empowerment. In 2018, Lexi dropped MARIA, IMMURED. The EP chronicles abuse from the sidelines, but helped Lexi identify where it was in her life, too.
