- Real friendship with God includes the freedom to bring Him our confusion and grief without pretense. Martha and Mary both said "Lord, if you had been here" — and Jesus did not rebuke them for it. Honesty before God is not a lack of faith; it is an expression of relationship.
- God's perspective on our suffering is not limited to the immediate moment. When Jesus said the illness would not lead to death, He was speaking to an outcome far greater than what Mary and Martha could see. When God seems silent, He may be working toward a glory we have not yet witnessed.
- Experiencing God's love does not guarantee a particular outcome, but it does mean we are held by Someone who knows the full story. The question is not whether God is able — it is whether we will trust Him when His timing and methods do not match our expectations.

Kingdom Stewardship
As you go throughout the week reflect on these takeaways:
- Your wants determine your worship. What you most eagerly pursue, most fear losing, and believe will bring you the greatest satisfaction is your true treasure. Jesus teaches that where your treasure is, your heart will follow. Faithful stewardship means intentionally placing your treasure where you want your heart to be, rather than simply following wherever your heart leads.
- Greed is a heart posture, not just a financial condition. The image of the healthy and bad eye reminds us that when our inner orientation is fixed on selfish accumulation, status, or comfort rather than God, what we perceive as light is actually darkness. Self-deception is one of the most dangerous spiritual conditions because it blinds us to our own true state before God.
- God demands total allegiance, not partial commitment. Jesus makes clear that serving two masters is not merely difficult — it is impossible. He does not ask to be first among many priorities; He asks to be Lord over all of them. The invitation is to surrender completely to the One who gave Himself completely for us.

Prideful People in the Pulpit and the Pews
As you go throughout the week reflect on these takeaways:
- Pride makes you the center of God's work instead of a contributor to God's work. Diotrephes loved to be first, but his desire for preeminence led to gossip, control, and the exclusion of fellow believers. We must regularly invite the Holy Spirit to examine our ambitions and ask honestly whether we are seeking to serve or to shine.
- Humility is not a low view of yourself — it is a right view of God and others. Demetrius did not have to announce his own importance. His faithfulness, integrity, and servant-oriented life earned trustworthy testimony from everyone who knew him. True humility is confirmed by community, not claimed by the individual.
- Christ alone holds first place. Colossians 1:18 reminds us that Jesus is the head of the church and the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. Any leadership that places a person's prominence above the truth and the mission of Christ is leadership that has drifted from the pattern Jesus himself set — coming not to be served, but to serve.
