Vitals and Voices EP 63

In the sixty-third episode of Vitals and Voices, we had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Dr. Sonia Singh, a board-certified internist, direct primary care physician, writer, and entrepreneur who is redefining what modern primary care can look like.

Based in Houston, Texas, Dr. Singh is the founder of Juniper Modern Primary Care, where she helps patients achieve healthier, happier lives through a proactive, personalized approach centered on nutrition, sleep, movement, mindset, and stress management. She is also the founder of Micropractice Mama, where she mentors physicians looking to build sustainable, independent practices rooted in autonomy, authenticity, and joy.

Dr. Singh shares how growing up in a family of physicians first introduced her to medicine, but it was a transformative experience shadowing a physician in rural Mexico that ultimately inspired her path. Witnessing compassionate, relationship-centered care delivered with minimal resources reshaped her understanding of what medicine could be. Years later, after experiencing the administrative burdens of traditional healthcare, she left a large health system to build her own direct primary care micropractice—one designed to put the patient-doctor relationship back at the center of care.

We discuss what continues to motivate her through the challenges of medicine: building meaningful, long-term relationships with patients while helping fellow physicians rediscover purpose in their careers. Through her consulting work, Dr. Singh has empowered doctors across the country to leave corporatized medicine and create practices that better serve both themselves and their patients.

Dr. Singh is especially passionate about physician autonomy and the future of direct primary care. She believes that reclaiming control over medical practice allows physicians to provide more thoughtful, personalized care while restoring the joy that often gets lost in today's healthcare system.

We also talk about one of the accomplishments she is most proud of—helping launch 10 direct primary care micropractices across the United States in just the past year and a half. Seeing physicians regain fulfillment in medicine while improving care for their communities has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her career.

This conversation is an inspiring look at entrepreneurship, innovation, and the power of returning medicine to its most essential foundation: the relationship between a doctor and their patient.

Vitals and Voices EP 62

In the sixty-second episode of Vitals and Voices, we had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Dr. Steven Goldstein, a pioneer in women’s health and medical imaging and a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

With a career spanning decades, Dr. Goldstein has served as Past President of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the North American Menopause Society, and the International Menopause Society. He is also the author of some of the earliest and most influential texts in gynecologic ultrasound, including the first-ever book dedicated to the subject—work that has fundamentally transformed how clinicians approach imaging in women’s health.

Dr. Goldstein shares how his passion for medicine began at a young age, inspired by early humanitarian efforts and a desire to make a meaningful impact. Today, that same curiosity continues to fuel his work in patient care, education, and innovation.

In our conversation, we explore his deep passion for modern medical imaging, including both its groundbreaking potential and the risks of overuse in today’s healthcare system. He also discusses his decades-long advocacy for menopause and perimenopause care, highlighting how he helped bring attention to a field that was once widely overlooked—including authoring one of the first medical textbooks on perimenopausal gynecology.

We also reflect on some of the most meaningful milestones in his career, including his induction into Alpha Omega Alpha as a faculty honoree and receiving the prestigious Ian Donald Gold Medal for his seminal contributions to gynecologic ultrasound—recognition that underscores the lasting global impact of his work.

This episode is a powerful look at leadership, innovation, and legacy in medicine. Dr. Goldstein’s journey reminds us of the importance of curiosity, advocacy, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in healthcare.

Vitals and Voices EP 61

In the sixty-one episode of Vitals and Voices, we sit down with Johna Joseph, a fourth-year medical student at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine who is preparing to enter the field of radiology. Originally from Haiti and raised in a military family, Johna’s journey has taken him across the world—from growing up in multiple countries to graduating high school in Italy, and eventually pursuing his undergraduate studies at Colgate University as a chemistry major and track and field athlete.

Johna shares how his path into medicine was deeply influenced by his mother’s experience with chronic illness. Witnessing her health challenges at a young age shaped his desire to help others and highlighted how profoundly health can impact quality of life. That early motivation has since evolved into a broader understanding of the complexities within the healthcare system and the many ways physicians can create meaningful change.

We talk about what keeps Johna grounded and motivated, from his deep appreciation for human connection to the relationships he’s built with patients, peers, and his community. He reflects on the importance of staying curious, embracing the human experience, and recognizing the role we all play in shaping the future of healthcare.

Johna is especially passionate about representation in medicine, emphasizing the importance of diversity within the physician workforce and the impact it has on patient care. He speaks candidly about the challenges and misconceptions surrounding diversity in healthcare, and why increasing representation is not just important—but necessary for improving outcomes in underserved communities.

Throughout our conversation, Johna highlights one of the accomplishments he is most proud of: completing medical school alongside a community of driven, talented peers who have supported and inspired him every step of the way. For him, this shared journey—learning, growing, and ultimately matching into residency together—has been one of the most meaningful parts of his experience.

Beyond medicine, Johna brings a unique perspective as a musician, language enthusiast, and someone who values humor and storytelling, reminding us that being a physician is just one part of a much larger identity.

Johna’s story is a powerful reflection of resilience, representation, and the importance of community—showing that medicine is not just about knowledge, but about connection, perspective, and purpose.
