When you think of our pattern of speech do you think what’s proper or improper; correct or incorrect; standard or unorthodox? In this episode we dive into vernacular and discuss African American Vernacular English. For decades African Americans have been stripped of our language and told the way we speak isn’t necessarily proper. But what’s united us over time has been our ability to adapt our speech with native tongue and the language that was mandated on our ancestors. As our way of speaking has become mainstream and acknowledge, we have to ask some tough questions. Should we gatekeep? Is it appropriation? Why should we code switch?

Vicinity: A Little Nepotism Never Hurt Nobody
Nepotism in the vicinity of how we shake and move as a community and are we reaping any benefits? Nepotism, root word nepos, a Latin term meaning nephew. Dating back to Middle Age, Catholic popes who’d taken chastity vows and had no offspring would hand their nephews positions of preference, as would a father to a son. Fast forward to today’s age and we can all think of instances of nepotism and its benefits. From Hollywood to the legacy preference in college admissions to the blatant lack of diversity within the NFL’s ownership. It’s happening! America’s most powerful dynasties keep it in the family, handing down wealth, power, business empires, and monarchies. What do you think about Nepotism within the black community? Do you believe there is more merit in starting from the bottom? Would you accept a head start? Do we embrace this ideology of bringing others up with us? Listen in, cause we want to hear your thoughts on the topic too.
