Bodoland Statehood Movement
<p>The Bodo's were one of the earliest settlers in Assam which belonged to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan family. Mostly concentrated in the Bodoland Territorial Region, north of the Brahmaputra River in Assam, they form the largest ethno-linguistic group in the state, with a population of around 6% according to the 2011 survey.</p> <p>The dispute can be dated back to the 1930s when Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma, a social and religious reformer of Bodo society, raised the demand for a separate Bodo state. This was instigated by a fear of cultural imperialism they would eventually face from Hindus and Muslims who had settled and taken control of the earlier Bodo controlled regions.
