<p>How safe is healthcare in prison and what happens when things go wrong?</p><p>In this episode of Voices for Safety, our host Dr Louise Gorman speaks with researchers Dr Joy McFadzean, Dr Jake Hard, and Dr Verity Wainwright about a major study examining avoidable healthcare-associated harm in English prisons. Drawing on the review of more than 15,000 prisoner health records, the team discusses how delays in treatment, communication challenges, prison transfers, staffing pressures, and gaps between healthcare and security systems can affect patient safety. </p><p>The conversation explores the complex healthcare needs of people in prison, the barriers they face in accessing care, and why prisoners may be significantly more likely to experience avoidable harm than people receiving healthcare in the community. The guests share real-world examples from the research, discuss the impact of these findings on health inequalities, and consider what changes are needed to improve safety and continuity of care both within prisons and during transitions between prison and community healthcare services. </p><p>This episode shines a light on an often-overlooked area of healthcare and highlights why improving patient safety in prisons is an important public health priority.</p>

Ep 7 - Unequal cancer care for people with a learning disability in the UK

<p>As we mark <strong>Learning Disability Week</strong>, this episode of Voices for Safety explores a critical patient safety issue: the inequalities people with a learning disability face when accessing cancer care.</p><p>Host Dr Louise Gorman speaks with Dr Oliver Kennedy, an NIHR Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester and a Medical Oncologist at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, whose research uncovers stark inequalities across the cancer care pathway in the UK.</p><p>Drawing on a large-scale NIHR-funded study of over 180,000 people with learning disabilities, Dr Kennedy explains how they are less likely to be referred for specialist tests, more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage, and around half as likely to receive treatment, resulting in much shorter survival times.</p><p>Together, they explore why these gaps exist – from communication challenges and diagnostic overshadowing to systemic barriers in screening and treatment – and discuss what needs to change across prevention, diagnosis, and care to create a more equitable system.</p><p>Released during Learning Disability Week 2026, this episode highlights the urgent need for more inclusive, accessible healthcare systems and the importance of ensuring everyone can receive timely, effective, and safe cancer care.</p><p><br></p><p><a href="https://www.psrc-gm.nihr.ac.uk/news/podcast/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Click for show notes, transcripts &amp; more</a></p><p><br></p><p>#NIHR #Patientsafety #Cancercare #Learningdisability #HealthInequalities</p>
