By carefully listening to the sea and life in it, the Embassy of the North Sea researches how non-humans - from phytoplankton to cod fish, to the North Sea itself - can become full-fledged members of society. Noordzeekanaal, bij Westhaven. Geluid boven en onder water

In een bootje rustig dobberend op het water klinkt de wereld doorgaans heel kalm. Zachtjes klotsend water tegen de boot, een briesje wind, geroep van vogels (meestel meeuwen) en van ander verkeer op het water. Zelfs op het druk bevaren Noordzeekanaal kun je prima tot rust komen. Maar ónder water klinkt het Noordzeekanaal heel anders. Dan hoor je ineens dat het Noordzeekanaal eigenlijk een snelweg is die door een industrieterrein loopt. Je hoort een vrijwel constant geratel van schroeven, het gestamp van motoren en gerinkel van kettingen. Onder water leeft van alles. We leren steeds meer over hoe vissen en andere waterdieren kunnen horen en communiceren middels geluid. Je kunt je wel voorstellen hoeveel last ze hebben van de luide ruis die onder water in het Noordzee kanaal klinkt. Deze opnames zijn gemaakt vanaf een bootje op het Noordzeekanaal tegenover de Westhaven. In je linkeroor hoor je het geluid boven water en in je rechteroor het geluid onder water. Deze twee opnames zijn tegelijkertijd gemaakt, dus je kunt goed het verschil horen.
