   # 106 A Touch of the Madness | Larry Kasanoff | Film & Media Producer, Los Angeles

In this episode of Voices On Art, I talk with film and entertainment producer Larry Kasanoff about creativity, risk, fear – and what he calls “A Touch of the Madness", which is also the title of his recently published book about creativity, asking, creating, playing – and having the courage to act on an idea. Larry has worked on films including Platoon, Terminator 2, True Lies, Dirty Dancing and the Mortal Kombat franchise, and has spent decades moving between film, games and other forms of entertainment. Although our worlds are different, art and film production have a lot in common: both begin with an idea and depend on vision, collaboration, risk and the courage to bring something new into the world. We talk about what a producer actually does – not simply financing a film, but developing an idea and keeping hundreds of people on one creative path. Larry tells me how taking a major risk on Platoon early in his career shaped his philosophy: exceptional work often begins where the safe choice ends. From there, our conversation moves into why fear can be such a powerful obstacle to creativity, why audiences still want the new and unexpected, and why Larry believes cinema has a future precisely because people still want shared experiences and human stories. We also talk about AI and new technologies, the difference between using technology as a tool and allowing it to replace the human element, the importance of fun and playfulness in art, and how Larry decides whether an idea is worth pursuing. Later in the conversation, Larry speaks about his friendship with Zen Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh and how mindfulness changed the way he works: doing one thing at a time instead of constantly multitasking. A conversation about making things, staying curious, taking chances – and keeping a little madness alive. And finally, we talk about age, experience and courage – and why, for Larry, getting older has made him more willing rather than less willing to take creative risks. My book pick for this episode, besides Larry's own book, is Siri Hustvedt’s Ghost Stories. Written in the wake of the death of her husband Paul Auster, it is a deeply personal book about love, loss, memory and creating. For me, it also offers an important counterpoint to the idea that creativity is always about pushing forward: sometimes it begins with listening, openness and allowing something to come to you. # 105 Learning by Doing | Walter Gehlen (EN) | Founder & Director, Art Düsseldorf

In this episode of Voices On Art, I speak with Walter Gehlen, co-founder and director of Art Düsseldorf, about a career that took many different turns before leading him to the art fair business. His early ambition was to become an artist, sparked in part by seeing Gerhard Richter at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf when he was 16. After being rejected by the Düsseldorf Academy, Walter studied art history, theatre and film, later economics, worked in psychiatric and infectious disease wards during his civil service, learned professional cooking and ran a catering business, before moving into business consulting and management. Rather than seeing these experiences as disconnected, we talk about what each of them taught him: dealing with people, understanding systems and marketplaces, reacting to difficult situations, improvising, and finding solutions when there is no obvious blueprint. Eventually, these different skills came together in the art fair business. Walter talks about his first fair projects with Andreas Lohaus, the move from Cologne to Düsseldorf and the development of Art Düsseldorf into an international platform. We discuss what actually makes an art fair work: selecting galleries, bringing the right collectors into the room, creating spaces that encourage encounters, and constantlyadjusting the model. We also talk about data, AI and the use of new technology behind the scenes — not as an end in itself, but as a way of taking care of repetitive work and making complex processes more efficient. And we come back to something quite simple: however sophisticated technology becomes, art still needs people in a room together. An art fair is not only a marketplace, but a place for encounters, conversations and relationships that develop over time. Digital tools can make things easier and more efficient, but they cannot replace the physical experience of art — or the human connections aroundit. A conversation about learning by doing, DIY thinking, curiosity, failure, entrepreneurship — and why a career doesn’t necessarily need a straight line. Language: english, c. 1:15 h Portrait photo by Achim Hehn Book Pick: My book pick for this Episode is Verschwende DeineJugend / Waste Your Youth by Jürgen Teipel. In Germanyoriginally published in 2001 by Suhrkamp Verlag. There is an English translation available through Suhrkamp, but the book hasn't been published yet. I think it's one of the most important books about the special culture of punk and new wave in Germany. As always you can listen to it at the end of the talk. This book gives deep insights into the development of punk in Germany, particularly in Dusseldorf, Hamburg, and Berlin, from the late 70s to the early 80s. Built entirely from original voices, the book captures these times in Germany, when places like Düsseldorf became laboratories for music, art, fashion, and ideas. Musicians, artists, writers, and outsiders all shared the same DIY attitude. If what you want doesn't exist, make it yourself. A strong reminder how powerful youth culture, any culture, can be. Not because it follows trends, because it invents them. If you're interested in how independence, fearlessness, and fun lead to creating contemporary art and independent culture, this is one of the essential books. # 104 Collecting on Her Own Terms | Andra Lauffs-Wegner (DE) | Collector, Bad Honnef

What makes someone dedicate an entire life to contemporary art? Collector Andra Lauffs-Wegner grew up surrounded by important works of post-war art. But collecting, she says, isn't inherited. It begins with an emotional response. In this conversation we talk about how a private passion became her exhibition space KAT-A , why she buys emotionally rather than strategically, and why supporting artists starts with acquiring their work. We discuss collecting without investment thinking, curating as acreative act, the importance of personal encounters with artists, and why enthusiasm is often more powerful than expertise when introducing people to contemporary art. Above all, this episode is about trusting intuition, recognizingopportunities, and creating cultural value without following a master plan. This Episode is in german.
