Vidličku známe až od konce 16. století. Dříve vidličky byly velmi dlouhé, měly asi půl metru. Původní vidličky měly pouze dva hroty a byly úplně rovné, takže často docházelo ke zraněním. Teprve koncem 18. století se vidličky zkrátily, zmnožil se počet hrotů a vidlička získala anatomický tvar. Ten kopíruje patro.
