Podcast Overview

A media literacy podcast by biased people. Bias is unavoidable. Being honest about it allows us to be critical of ourselves as much as the content we absorb. In each episode, we'll assess the way media is portrayed through the lens of media literacy. We want to know WHO is saying it, WHY they are saying it, and HOW we perceive it. This is a Wande Industries production. To learn more about the work we're doing, visit https://wandeindustries.com 🙌 We'd love to hear from you! Native American Whose-story?

The Northern Hemisphere is deep into fall. School has been in session for a while now, and the first benchmark into the holiday season is here: Thanksgiving. Our hosts took this as an opportunity to reflect on our Stateside education system and its relationship with the history of Native American, Indigenous, and First Nation folks. This episode takes a look at Native American history being taught in high schools from a media literacy perspective.

References: https://bit.ly/39dtV37

Robert Kraft: That one time he got laid... or something

Our hosts reflect on Robert Kraft’s dropped solicitation charges and the implications that it has on the sex industry. While it’s normalized for men to solicit sexual services, there’s a double standard that shames the workers supplying it, and our justice system is ill-equipped to address the issues that come with the industry. The cameras that were set up to catch human traffickers are the same ones that allowed Robert Kraft and the other men to walk free, meanwhile the women providing the services -- potential trafficking victims -- are facing criminal charges.

References (https://bit.ly/32aZx4T)

Breaking Down the Ballot Measures

In addition to the presidential election, many states will be choosing YES or NO on various measures. These are literally amendments to the state constitution! We can't snooze on them! In fact, these state measures tend to affect citizens more directly than federal decisions. In this episode we share ways to assess the measures through a media literacy perspective: understanding the WHO, WHY, and WHAT.

Human trafficking is an intersectional issue that is impacted (or fueled) by the results that come from measures which affect people's income and safety.

Episode References: https://bit.ly/3m2a0Hg
