   The Fly (1986) (Spooky Szn)

Spooky Szn continues its march through body horror perfection on We Drink & We Watch Things as we pivot from the ancestral horrors of Hereditary to David Cronenberg’s tragic, grotesque 1986 sci-fi masterpiece: The Fly. A film that somehow manages to be equal parts heartbreaking romance, horrific physical transformation, and timeless creature feature. To fuel our descent into telepod mutation, we are serving up a custom cocktail called "Insectinside" - an extra sweet, decadent riff on a classic Carajillo that blends smooth Licor 43, rich espresso, and a dash of sugar over ice. It is sweet, caffeinated, and delightfully sticky, serving as a proper liquid homage to Seth Brundle's messy, sugar-obsessed transition into Brundlefly. This week, we unpack Cronenberg’s incredible direction and his masterclass in practical special effects, celebrating Chris Walas’s Oscar-winning makeup work that still makes audiences squirm 40 years later. We gush over the off-the-charts screen chemistry between Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, analyzing how Goldblum’s manic, tragic performance grounds the film’s grotesque bodily decay in genuine human heartbreak. We also talk through the film’s metaphors for aging, disease, and loss, and break down that devastating, gut-wrenching final sequence in the lab. If you still get uneasy at the sound of buzzing wings, or if you want to hear us rave about one of the absolute greatest horror remakes ever made, hit play now. We are blending our deep appreciation for classic body horror with our usual casual banter, keeping Spooky Szn mutated and thriving. Hereditary (Spooky Szn)

Spooky Szn rolls on on We Drink & We Watch Things as we move from the meta-slasher thrills of Woodsboro straight into Ari Aster’s masterclass in psychological terror and familial dread: Hereditary. Released in 2018, this modern horror masterpiece proved that a film can be deeply traumatic, devastatingly sad, and utterly terrifying all at the same time. To summon the necessary strength to process the Graham family's tragic descent, we are sipping on a custom cocktail by Mackenzie called "Hail Paimon" - a dark, rich Boulevardier variation blending bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth, and a dash of chocolate bitters over a single rock. It is complex, spirit-forward, and carries a bitter, lingering finish that stays with you long after the glass is empty. This week, we unpack Ari Aster’s extraordinary directorial debut and how he uses grief to build unbearable tension. We praise Toni Collette’s astonishing, snubbed-by-the-Oscars performance as Annie Graham, Alex Wolff’s harrowing portrayal of Peter, and Milly Shapiro’s iconic turn as Charlie. We break down the incredible miniature set design, analyze that jaw-dropping telephone pole sequence, and discuss the eerie, slow-burn cult mythology leading up to one of the most wild, disturbing final acts in horror history. If you still flinch whenever you hear a tongue-click in a dark room, or if you want to hear us breakdown a movie that genuinely left us shaken, hit play now. We are blending our reverence for modern horror cinema with our usual casual banter, keeping Spooky Szn moving into terrifying new depths. Scream 4 (Spooky Szn)

October has officially arrived on We Drink & We Watch Things, and that means it is time for our favorite month of the year: Spooky Szn! All month long, we are diving into horror classics, modern slashers, and terrifying haunts to celebrate the Halloween season. To kick off the spooky festivities in style, we are returning to the fictional town with the highest body count in California for Wes Craven’s brilliant, ahead-of-its-time meta-slasher: Scream 4. To survive the night against Ghostface, Lemar has designed a custom cocktail called "Return to Woodsboro" - a sharp, blood-red concoction that brings all the high-voltage energy you need to break down the rules of a modern remake. This week, we unpack why Scream 4 stands out as one of the sharpest horror sequels of the 2010s. We gush over Neve Campbell’s unstoppable Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox and David Arquette’s veteran presence, and Emma Roberts’ iconically unhinged performance as Jill Roberts. We break down Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s uncanny ability to predict the rise of social media clout-chasing, analyze that incredible hospital third-act showdown, and debate where this entry lands in our overall ranking of the Scream franchise. If you know the ultimate rule of surviving a horror remake, or if you just want to hear us kick off Halloween month with maximum slasher energy, hit play now. We are blending our deep love for horror with our usual casual banter, making this the perfect opening kill for Spooky Szn. What's your favorite scary movie?
