[…] I followed the sound and found him running down the stairs from the attic room at the top of the house, inconsolable. My Aunt Jean, his mom, came to see what the matter was, doing her best to calm him down. It took what seemed like forever for her to get him settled, but whatever it was that had got him so hysterically upset, no one could ever get it out of him. Nathaniel became a little more distant after that, nothing extreme, but I'd catch him sometimes, face scrunched up, eyes glazed over, like he was darkly daydreaming about something troubling.
