Ep. 32 - If You’re Not at the Table, You’re on the Menu | The Global Caribbean Is Moving
What happens when the Caribbean stops seeing itself simply as a collection of countries and starts recognizing itself as a global economic ecosystem? In this episode of the WE WHISTLE Podcast, co-founders Stacey Luces and Denise Williams take listeners behind the scenes of a whirlwind month that moved from Orlando and Miami to New York City during Climate Week and the United Nations General Assembly.Across investment forums, healthcare summits, infrastructure conversations, diaspora gatherings, government meetings and some very Caribbean moments involving food, fetes and getting lost on the New York subway, Stacey and Denise began seeing the same pattern: The Global Caribbean is moving. The question is whether we are positioned to move with it.Billions of dollars in infrastructure investment are being discussed across the region. Governments are looking differently at diaspora investment. Healthcare leaders are exploring shared procurement and regional solutions. Food and agriculture are creating new cross-border opportunities. Global companies, investors and institutions are paying attention to the Caribbean. And behind every headline number sits an ecosystem of opportunity: engineering, construction, technology, healthcare, finance, insurance, law, logistics, procurement, project management, investment, communications and expertise. The challenge is recognizing where you fit before the opportunity has already passed. The conversation also gets uncomfortable. Stacey and Denise share what it felt like to sit in global rooms where the Caribbean was being discussed as an asset, market or opportunity, but Caribbean people were not always equally present as participants in the conversation.Their takeaway is simple: If we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu. And getting to the table requires more than individual success. It requires information, coordination, relationships and the ability to connect Caribbean expertise, capital and access across borders before decisions are already made. Pasted textThat question sits at the heart of what Stacey and Denise are building through WE WHISTLE Global. They take listeners inside WHISTLE’s evolving ecosystem and share how Council sessions, Capital Tables, SIGNAL gatherings, strategic partnerships and smaller trusted rooms are being used to connect people who know things, people who can open doors, people with capital, people building businesses and people solving problems across the Caribbean and its diaspora.Because knowing impressive people isn’t enough. Are you activating your network? Are people calling your name in rooms you aren’t in? And do the people around you actually know what you can do? Pasted textHighlights• Why billions in Caribbean infrastructure investment may have more to do with your business or expertise than you think• What changes when the diaspora is viewed not simply as a source of remittances or philanthropy, but as investors, operators and participants• Why being talked about in important rooms is very different from having a voice inside them• Healthcare, infrastructure, food, energy and other opportunities emerging across the Caribbean• Why relationships and networks only become powerful when we actually activate them• How WHISTLE is building a coordination point for Caribbean expertise, capital, relationships, information and opportunityAbout WE WHISTLE GlobalWE WHISTLE Global is a leadership and membership organization built for global leaders of Caribbean heritage and aligned partners to fully belong and do extraordinary things together.
