Gad and Reuven chose it for material reasons, but Menashe received it from Moshe as part of Hashem’s plan to extend the holiness of Eretz Yisrael and prepare for the ultimate expansion of its borders in the era of Moshiach. The key is attitude: a Jew may be sent beyond familiar boundaries on a holy mission, yet must never lose the deep love for Eretz Yisrael or become settled in golus. Like Menashe, we are called to remember our true home, reject the mentality of exile, and use every place we find ourselves to advance Moshe’s vision and bring the Geulah closer.
