Dear Earth: An invitation to Hope

Would you ever help someone you love if you had the chance?

At first, that might feel like a naive question; of course the answer is “yes.” But what if the “someone” is Earth itself? And what about those moments when we unintentionally harm someone we love—out of ignorance, habit, or even fear? In this Earth Day episode, we re-introduce the environment not as an abstract issue or distant crisis, but as a relationship. Like any relationship, it’s layered with emotions: love in the warmth of summer, detachment in the cold of winter, or refreshing hope carried by the wind.

In this episode, we discuss the misconceptions that make students feel helpless, the discouragement that comes when efforts seem too small, and the emotional weight of caring about the planet in a world that sometimes dismisses those concerns. We also spoke about how fear and avoidance are part of the spectrum of climate emotions; reminding us that hesitation doesn’t always come from indifference. And we broaden the conversation beyond climate, recognizing that environmental well-being also means thinking about the spaces we create, the communities we nurture, and the ways these environments shape our everyday well-being.

Together with Nicole Arsenault, Director of Sustainability at York University and a proud graduate of both Glendon and the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, our host Susu B explores how environmental well-being goes far beyond climate change. It shows up in our daily lives—in our study spaces, our homes, and our campus, and it deeply affects our mental and physical health.

Resources:

https://www.yorku.ca/sustainability/

https://www.yorku.ca/sustainability/earth-month/

Sustainability Tips: https://www.yorku.ca/sustainability/resources-links/

Sustainability Strategy - https://www.yorku.ca/sustainability/priorities/sustainability-strategy/

The Art in Our Stars: A National Arts Day Special

When you think of art, where does your mind go?

Art isn’t just about a famous painting on a museum wall, or the powerful acting in a movie like The Fault in Our Stars. It encompasses that and so much more — from the doodles in your notebook to the creative spark I’m using right now to write this description.

In this National Art Day special, we re-introduce the concept of art, reminding ourselves that it’s not exclusive to those who pursue it professionally. We dive into the many ways art supports our well-being — mentally, physically, socially, culturally, and even spiritually. We talk about embracing creativity without guilt or perfectionism, and for those who do pursue it professionally, how to balance art as both passion and work.

These reflections come to life as our host, Susu B., sits down with Karma, an artist, writer, and recent Visual Arts graduate from York University, and a member of the on-campus arts collective Studio Hurricane, to explore what it truly means to live creatively.

Join us on this journey and discover how even something as simple as pondering the late-night stars can be its own form of art!

Resources:

Creative Art Therapy Association: https://catayu.club.yorku.ca/

https://ampd.yorku.ca/ampd-to-host-national-portfolio-day-on-november-4/

National Portfolio Day (November 1st) https://ampd.yorku.ca/npd/

The Goldfarb Gallery: https://thegoldfarbgallery.ca/

https://www.yorku.ca/scld/eleanor-winters-art-gallery/

Creative Arts Workshop: https://www.yorku.ca/colleges/ccsc/creative-arts-workshops/

Visual Arts Studio: https://futurestudents.yorku.ca/program/visual-arts

Studio Hurricane Creative Club @shcreativeclub (Instagram)

Creative Writing Students Association @cwsayorku (Instagram)

VASA (Visual arts students association)

CASA (creative arts student association)

Mini-episode on Food Access

If I asked you to name one need you’re constantly thinking about right now, what would it be?

If I asked you to name one need you’re constantly thinking about right now, what would it be? Maybe you're aiming for academic success and focusing on high grades during exam season, or maybe you're striving for strength and health to support your physical well-being goals, or perhaps your focus is on occupational well-being meeting work deadlines and building a path toward career satisfaction. These are all common priorities in our society. Yet in the middle of all these goals, we often overlook the most fundamental need of all: food access. Food is this one currency that can buy you the energy resources to study for your academic success, strive with your physical health and focus for your career satisfaction. Based on data reported through the 2025 Canadian Campus Well-being Survey, a survey many of you may have filled out yourselves, food insecurity remains a significant issue for students. That’s why, in this mini-episode of Well-being & YU, we took the extra step, literally, and visited key locations on campus to explore the food supports available to students.

Our host Susu B. sits down with Lakshika, the YUM Market Coordinator at Regenesis YU, and Symone Lennon, Vice President of Advocacy and Campaigns at the York Federation of Students (YFS). Together they discuss the services available to students, how to access these resources, and what they would say to anyone who may feel hesitant about reaching out for support.

Join us as we explore food security on campus and learn more about the resources designed to support student well-being!

Resources:

Food Resources: Access to food and supports is important for your student success.
